Thanks! |

Are you kidding??? In LA, I thought the whole city was filled with actresses or models. :o)
Anyway, have no clue since I have never been to LA, only NY and Boston but over here I recently contacted a small modeling agency that is just getting on it´s feet and we are going to cooperate a little bit in spring, me getting some experience and they getting their models a free shoot. |

I'm sure here in LA there are tons of aspiring models that need their first photographs taken. I need the practice so I'm just looking for a place to start. Maybe onemodelplace might be a good place too look or call some modeling agencies. I'll take the photographs and burn them to cd's for the models but I don't plan on printing them... Is that pretty normal? |

You could try putting an ad on craigslist. I frequently see ads like that on the Minneapolis section. I guess there's really no guaranteeing the "quality" of who you'll get but it might be worth a shot... |

One thing I would suggest, especially if looking online for models ....
Have an online portfolio you can point them to. I have had several people approach me because they have seen some of the photos I have done. My better half was collecting some prints for me the other day and was sitting flicking through them as she was waiting to get her hair cut. One of the girl's in the store asked if I would do some for her, and then she showed them to her friend who wanted in as well.
I think being able to do this "this is the sort of picture I could do of you!" approach works very well :)

I do TFCD with models on OMP and other places. I do the shoot, let them view the proofs and pick about 10 poses and then edit those and give them to them on CD in high res and low res versions. Seems to go over well with the ones I've worked with so far.

How do you contact the models? Do you have a studio or do you do on location work with these models? |

Over the summer, I would contact them via OMP and work on location with them. I have several nice locations around my area. Since it has got cold, I haven't persued much with the models, because I have been busy getting ready for weddings this summer.
Finding and contacting models on OMP is very easy. I just started out with the basic acct ($10) and contacted a few new models in my area and offered to do a shoot with them, and they were usually more than willing.
If you want to talk more via e-mail, just PM.

The most active site for tfp is onemodelplace.com. You also have a lot top notch model photographers. I am a member there. |

I would find if you have a modeling agencey in your hometown and then I would direct something there way! Most modeling agency will charge there models fees to build there portfolios. Quite expensive! So if you can offer free photo shoot that will usually get there attention! |

I am far from an expert in this area, but my initial experience suggests that models need at least a basic portfolio or comp card to get the attention of a decent agency. A decent agency may be willing to send some people your way, but they usually have a group of photographers they use on a regular basis. The other type of agency makes their money off portfolios and you don't want anything to do with them. OneModelPlace seems to be a good place to get started with TFP work.

I highly recommend onemodelplace as well. If you look at my DPC profile, you'll see a small selection of photos of OMP models. It's the best thing I ever did to get the experience I need for portrait photography. I have my "studio" set up in my living room. Everytime I have a shoot I have to move the furniture out and the lights in but I serves it's purpose. |

You could also just put up postings on local university or college bulletin boards for your free services. |

I have been having luck with co-workers. Two have asked me to photograph them. One has done modeling work before and is willing to do some stock work. I keep some portraits I've done on a wall in my cubicle. Now that I have volunteers, I'm really nervous. |

Eric,
I've tried a few things. I've used the bulletin board posting to get some subjects but (1) I had to be sure and get my postings approved at most schools in my area so find out who manages those postings at schools around you and (2) the motivation/interest of the individuals who answer those posts may not be the best thing to introduce to your own initial efforts to shoot portraiture (glamour, fashion, headshots, etc).
I am listed on and have used sites like FreeLanceModels.com, GarageGlamour.com and OneModelPlace.com. For my money OMP is by far and away the most professional in terms of service supplied to all clients (model, photogs, mua, etc) and it has the highest volume of subjects who seem truly motivated to succeed at modeling. I suppose either of the other services works but any model I've found that is interested in getting some work via online venues has a portfolio on OMP even if she also has one on another site. I'd suggest trying out any of the free services and finding one that pays off for you.
I do shoot with some people from work but I get a little concerned that people at work may get the wrong impression about how dedicated I am to my day job when I have people stopping by my workplace to talk about a photoshoot or some ideas for the next photoshoot so I try to only do that type of work for people who actively seek me out. I also segregate communication as much as I can by only using external e-mail to communicate with those subjects so that they, too, can see a solid delineation between how I approach my career and how I approach a hobby for which I have a passion.
Finally, I contacted some of the local modeling agencies (Chattanooga, TN only had 4 at the time I started doing this) and all of them required that I submit a portfolio that they could evaluate to see if it would even be worth their time to send subjects to me to have their headshots or any other work done. At the time I didn't (duhhh, that's one reason to work TFP is to build or bolster your portfolio). Now I have some work to show and I get calls to shoot for models.
You can have success with any of these venues or others. I'd suggest checking out OMP as a fairly solid source.
Kev

Thanks everyone for the comments. I put a listing on OMP and contacted a few models. I might end up paying some models because then I'll get some with experience which will help the photos turn out better. I found one model that will only charge like $50/hr... Doesn't sound too bad to me. |

Hi Kevin, do I understand you correctly that you submitted a portfolio to talent/modeling agencies/managers and they are calling you to photograph their models? That awesome!!! |
