Can anyone tell me why most of you use photoshops unsharpmask instead of just clicking on the "sharpen" or "sharpen more" options? The usm is definately more complicated but do you all really like it more?

Check out this tutorial... I found it to be VERY helpful:

For the same reason we use curves instead of levels; more control available, if you're willing to expend the effort.

Different photographs require different amounts of sharpening depending on a lot of things (whether you shot RAW or JPG, how much detail is in the photo, etc...). Just as there is no single "Brighten" setting, there is no one size fits all for sharpening, which is why "Sharpen" and "Sharpen More" are pretty much a waste of time. Unsharp Mask allows you to provide the exact amount of sharpening needed for each photo.

Am I the only person who hates USM around here?

I much prefer to use the full 'sharpen' filter to varying degress (sometimes on the Lightness channel in Lab colour mode) and spot mask the layer over an unsharpened one. I prefer this kind of control and I actually don't like the interface of USM anyway.

I only use USM when I'm preparing for a submission to DPC where the restrictions stop me applying selective sharpenning using the technique described by Imagineer.

Where I have to apply a uniform effect then USM gives at least some element of control.
