I'm having a really hard time with this voting lark. Some of the photos are truly stunning, and score 8s or 9s from me. A tiny handful are outstanding, and get a 10. I don't think I've had the heart to give a 1 yet, and even a blurry photo (apologies blindjustice) with good framing and subject gets a 2 or a 3.

Since the average of the scale is 5.5, good pics get 6 and above, less interesting 5 and below. I understand everyone has different tastes, but looking at some of my previous scores from the first two challenges, and the incredible mediocrity of my current score (5.6 something with only 6 comments), I can't help but wonder how everyone else votes?

Ok, I'm biased, but how does a well executed, but clearly not perfect photo merit 1 out of 10? Are people voting low to reduce the average and bump their own pics higher? That 1 costs a lot in an average when you are battling for every .1.

It just disheartens me really in my third challenge here. Of course I have a *huge* amount still to learn, but maybe this voting is taking the focus of what we should be getting out of DPC - the joy of taking and viewing photos of the things we see all over the world.

Anyway, we'll see how it all ends up.

Jamie

I know without a subject to shoot my voting is a lot different then normal. I find appeal, clarity, color DOF etc. playing even more of a role then I normally would due to no challenge topic.

Don't feel bad--I'm in my 50th challenge, still being disheartened every time by votes on what (at least is currently) two of my best works (breaking new ground too). The comments I am getting are high to even raving, it has two favorites, and yet, I am sitting at 5.6 in O4 and 5.4 in BG (with 1 fav).

I think (and I'm going to have to try and swallow this advice too) that you have to realize that DPC is a popular vote, and not a typical photo critic crowd. There are a great many beginning photographers here and they are wowed mostly by extreme technique (somewhat oversharpened, oversaturated color), freeze motion (water drops do particularly well here), and studio trick/humorous shots. Many great photos do only average. Nontraditional photos--artistic--generally (not always) do below average.

Here's an example of a photo I think should be in a gallery but barely made 6.0 and the top 10% of a challenge. It's one by banmorn:

There are many such examples, some which finished much lower, but that's one that I could grab from my favorites and which stands out to me.

I am beginning to accept the fact that at least a large portion of what I like to do in photography lies outside the bounds of DPC. For some photographers, following the guidelines of what is "winning" here would not improve your work. Not that there aren't things to be learned here, but certainly getting a good score is not essential to the learning process. But I understand first hand that it's hard to be motivated when you submit your best and get pummeled!

Leslie... Your images tend to be a bit on the fringes so you should not be offended by a horrible, mean comment. DPC is a very general audience. There are all kinds of voters. That is it's strength, really. But at the edges are ones that really like your work and those that really hate your work.

Your work is good. That is all that matters. Don't take those that do not like it to personally.

Obviously, more people like it than not.

woo hoo My best score ever and my first ever to get on a wish list. Still down from the 5.98 it stated at... bummer I had guessed a 5.933 on the guess your score thread...
01/21/2005 11:34:17 AM · #135
I'm also on a wish list for the first time ever but my score is at 4.83. It's a decent photo but it certainly doesn't hold up in an annual 'best of' challenge!

I am disappointed in the voting of this challenge (although not necessarily with my score in particular). I can tell you that I had a hard time voting. First I went through and voted every picture as I normally would. (my average vote in competitions is a 5.2). Then I went through and re-voted every picture. When I first voted by comparing pictures in terms of "wow" and technique AGAINST each other, the majority of photos received a vote of "5" or "6". When I went through and voted each picture INDIVIDUALLY for merit- I had to up the score on 90% of the pictures. For those who are receiving low scores, take heart. I think many voters are voting the way I started. Which do you think would vote higher (even if both were infocus, colorful, etc. etc. etc.) a sunset along a shoreline, someone's kid, or a macro of a flower? Can these really be compared???

PS One of my irks is seeing that some the "best" (or high scored) photographers on this site (in their profile)vote an average of "4" in challenges. Really?

Kevin, you commented on mine thanks :) and thanks for skating over my obvious mistook. Am wondering how much harm it will cause to the final score? Whoohoo, am really pleased though, just spent an entire 24 hours at 6.7

Did I give it a bad comment or bad score??? Either way If I asked you a question and you didn't respond to me and chances are you get what I gave you but if you clarify an error that I see that could be MY mistake then I will apologize now and correct MY mistake. It's nice to get some feedback from people and hopefully I can comment on all of them. Good luck with this challenge and all the best in 2005.
