While voting on the bokeh challenged, I came across an image that was a very wide crop. Now, it looked like it had the potential to be a really good photo, but it was just too small to make out the detail. I've noticed this a couple times before with other challenges. It seems to me that limiting images to a maximum length or width of 640 pixels kind of screws over someone who chooses to use a wide crop. Someone who chooses a square crop gets a lot more space to work with and can show a lot more detail.

Is it possible to instead limit the total number of pixels rather than the dimensions, for example 640x640=409600. This would be the biggest image area one could submit under the current limits. Why not allow a wide crop to be submitted at 400x1024 (also =409600 total)? This would allow the wide crops a useful amount of detail while keeping the overall image area the same as a square crop.

Hopefully I explained that well...thoughts?

As I started reading your post I had the same idea of using the total number of pixels. I think it is an excellent idea but, as usual, there could be problems. Image using an 800x600 res monitor to view a 40960 x 10 pixel file ; ] At least some limits should be in order.

A very good point! We can still give the wide crop folks a little more to work with though, I think. I'm guessing most people, perticularly those into digital photography, have their monitors set to a resolution with a width at least somewhat greater than 640 pixels.

I just feel really bad voting people down when I can't make out their image for reasons that are no fault of their own.

I only find a problem when submissions don't use the full 640 pixels allowed for the longest dimension. Even at 600 there's still a lot of detail in most images.

Another thing that causes a lack of detail to show up is related to the viewer's monitor not being calibrated properly so what should show as several shades of black or white just blends together into one blob.
