Greetings. Way back a few months ago, I broke into a couple back-to-back 6 plus photos. But since then I've been more or less stuck at 5 point something. I would be very grateful for insight into what aspects of photography might be beneficial for me to work more on. By aspects, I am thinking of the idea/concept of the picture, the photographic execution of the idea, and post-processing. In my own conceit, I believe that I tend have good ideas but they generally don't come out as I had seen in my mind's eye.

In particular, here are some recent challenge entries - there are helpful comments on each, but I am greedy for more feedback. (Who isn't?) Overall, how might I improve? Could a better (winning?) entry have been made from these beginnings or is it back to the drawing board? Many thanks!

yo ho ho - very nice
abandonded - kind of snap shot like. i figure you went b&w to give it an old run down feeling, but at the same time it appears to me be an attempt to add interest of feeling to a pic that lacks it in composition and idea.
I've Got A Bad Feeling About This - average. not a good use of DOF. Not sure all the diffeent sized pawns got the message across. I want to make 10 suggestions to try a different comopositon - umm, that tells me that the shot is just average. You'll have them now and again.
Hourglass technically ok, the candle it a bit blown out, but hard not to. very vertical composition. has possibilies, but perhaps if it was on a desk with an old book or two, an inkwell or ...maket the hourglass the focus, but add more props.
Autumn's Arrival these drippy pics do well here generally. the red leaf distracts/fights for attention, and mabe one branch or mroe DOF to get both in focus. A very good idea, but not implemented the best
Explain extention tube to me - does it make a lens suitable for macro or??
Excaliburtechncially nice. i like the star filter useage. i'd like to see more blade, or a hand or a rock with the blade stuck in it.
Hanging By A Thread the hand color cost you here. otherwise not too bad at all - idea, background, simplicity.

I see here a collection of many tupes of shots (inside, outside, macro, b&w, etc). What i don't see is people/persons. Except for my 4 year old i have that problem too,but pics with my kid are my highest scoring. Got to be some connection there, on a biological level maybe.

What seems to be lacking overall is what i have begun to call the 'frameable' quality. These are excellent stock type shots, but not something you'd (you being the average person) would pick to hang on their walls at home or work, not calendar shots, not magazine covers.

You're doing much better than me - I hope to attain your 'level' this year. Good luck.

Now you tell me, what do we need to do to get to this level?
