I look at the rules and they state File Size: No larger than 150 KB (153,600 bytes).
But I tried making an image that size and it looks like pixelated crap! I looked at other member's entries and I see that some of them are 800 Kb. What gives?

The entry should be no larger than 640px on the longest side. The maximum size is therefore 640x640. Even a very high-detailimage saved at 150kb, 640x640 will have very good reproduction. Are you trying to reduce a much hihger resolution photo to 150k?

No entries are allowed over 150k
The system checks upon uploading.

To advice you on how best to save for a challenge it would help to know what software you are using.

Keep in mind that the longest side can only be 640 pixels.

Also, I sincerly doubt any challenge entries are 800kb since it will not upload for a challenge if it is over 150kb.

edit: Too Slow... sorry to be repetitive

Take a look at my portfolio; these are all 640 pixels on the long dimension at 72 lpi, and they look OK. All under 150k also. Where are you finding 800k images? I'd like to see one...

Robt.

OK you tell me What I am doing wrong. I resize an image to 640x640 pixels at 72dpi in Photoshop and the Image Size dialiog box says the image is 1.17M

Should I be compressing these files?

640x640 is 1.17MB?? Is that an uncompressed TIFF file? If so, you need to save it as JPG; if you're using Photoshop, use the "save for web" option, and set the quality slider as required to get in just under the 150kb limit.

And how do you do that. When I tried Save for Web it coverted it to a gif. When I went to Save As and saved it as a jpeg 640x470 at 72dpi it was still 831k. I know I must sound like a dumbass but I usually only work in tiffs.

When you open the "save for web" dialog there is a drop-down where you can choose to save as JPEG. Once you've selected the JPEG file type for saving you should see the quality slider to the right. You shoudl also check the "optimized" check box immediately above the quality slider.
Please post back if you're still having trouble with the size.

Several ways. First, you can "Save as..." and select JPEG format. A dialog box will pop up and you can adjust the parameters of the JPEG compression.

You can do a "Save for web" and select the JPEG option and adjust the slider for JPEG quality. Keep the estimated file size under 150k.

portfolio images can be pretty much any size - i know i've uploaded files over 1mb before. challenge entries are certainly restricted to 150k.
