I want to thank all who replied, as well as those who posted comments after the voting. They were almost all helpful in my understanding of what went wrong here. I think that for one thing, I was a bit too emotionally attached to the challenge. Just out of curiosity, would this outtake have done any better? This was my first choice, but my "advisor" convinced me that the other was "higher impact".

Sorry for the absence recently, but I've been in transit from holiday visit. Hope that all have a great new year!

Your link is wrong. You need to click on My Profile and go into the image that way and get theURL. The link you provided makes everyone pull up their own Portfolio page. :)

PS I sense this scenario happening alot; People register after stumbling upon the site (i stumbled upon this site via search engine) and vote through a challenge giving horrible votes and sometimes comments. I don't see anyway around this while still being fair to the 'open' people surfing the site.

Interesting point - maybe we should make it a rule that you have to enter a least 1 challenge before you can vote and until they did they would be allowed to make comments only?. Just an idea

OUCH! I can't figure out how to get the image through My Profile. It is only in the workshop area of my portfolio. Sorry to be so dense.

All you need is the image id.

[thumb]imageid[/thumb]

The quick way is to use the last button above the post window and enter the image id in the text box.

Open the picture up in your portfolio, then to the left (about half way down) you'll see something like View Photo Page, this will open up the photo. You can then copy and paste the URL, or grab the number off the end and insert a thumbnail into the forum.

Ahh...you could also just move the photo out of your Workshop folder into the root of your portfolio, or create a new folder and place it in there. The "Workshop" folder is private.

It can't be number 2. The image id is probably a six digit number (the number after IMAGE_ID=.

Here's the link to one of mine:

Below is the image id between thumb tags

Ya got it!!

I think I like the pose in your entry better. The only thing maybe would be to change the position of the frisbee in the first one but I feel the perspective in the first gives more impact.

I think the one you submitted portrayed you feeling of loss better.

Have just been following this thread since the Pet challenge was my first entry. I did appreciate the comments and for the most part agreed with them - my contrast was off and it definately affected my score. However, I think in the case of your photo I agree that the lack of a pet, and short amount of time most people spend actually looking at the photo for an interpretation caused the low score. Generally I believe people scan through the entries fairly quickly. I like to "assume" everyone deserves a 5 and then I rate up or down from there. It is rare I would rate a photo below a 3, and if I did I would absolutely leave a comment. I believe this is a fantastic website for learning and trying new techniques - the feedback is a valuble tool in becoming a better photographer, and artist as most of these challenges demand that type of creativity.

Unfortunately I also feel there are a number of people using the site just to have their photos "posted", this is a photo challenge and as such, images should be judged on creativity, appropriatness to the challenge subject, and technical quality. Your image may have been judged low due to failure in multiple areas according to some people.

High marks for creativity - anyone who has lost a pet can appreciate your shot.

LOL. Sorry, but I thought that was pretty funny. I've had a dog in the house almost all my life and I still wasn't sure what that was. A drum definitely was a possibility though I figured a frisbee to be more likely. The picture had excellent emotion. Though the hand was kinda too big imho from distortion. It looks bloated. The focus forced the eye on the bloated hand and semi-identifiable object. The expression on the talent was winning and I think warranted more focus in this case as it was the real subject of the photo i.e. the loss. Also I don't think subtle subject matter ever wins here unless it's actually the challenge topic. I gave it a 5.
