I'm trying to decide which of these two images to enter in Club competition. Anybody have any ideas, or should I just flip a coin?
front view
side profile

Depends what you are after. The front view shrieks "camouflage", which is what a bittern is all about. The side view is more graceful. Also, if you do use the front view maybe hue/saturate to match the side view, which is more handsome.

Robt.

Thanks, Bear_Music. That was what I was looking for. I rarely use (and tend to forget it is there) the hue/saturation feature. Following your suggestion, I used it on FrontView; it made all the difference. Decision made.

the front one. there is a bit of (motion?) blur on the tip of the beak in the side one. both are quite good.
aha: so this is the work of the 50-500 sigma, I've been thinking about that lens. how is it? what focal length was this on?

Here are the numbers on both images:
Shutter speed: 1/200
Aperture: 6.3
ISO 100
Focal Length: 500mm
This guy was in the reeds on driver's side of the road. I had the camera balanced on the car window for opportunities like this one, so he was about 20 feet away. (Doesn't everyone drive one handed when there's photography to be done?)

Thanks for all the comments. I appreciate them!

I like the second one best, but both are pretty good captures. You do nice work with that lens. Let us know how you do in the comp.

Okay, will do. I'll get a slide made now and enter it mid-January.

Well, eleven months later, I can tell you how the Bittern made out. It wandered through competition all year, taking a few awards and then rested until I entered it in the End of Year competitions held today.

It won Slide of the year in Nature, and I thought, wow, that worked out well.

Then at the end of the judging, it took the Grand Slide of the Year award and I'm still sitting on Cloud Nine wondering what happened.

So thanks to everyone who gave me good advice way back in the first bit of 2005.

The first one for sure. This is their true hiding stance and how they hide in the reeds/cattails. Nice capture.

Man, I didn't notice the dates and was thinking to myself that someone really blew a chance at a ribbon for the camoflauge challenge. But I see that's small peanuts...

Congrats! What a great capture.

Oh man that is so cool! Congratulations! I've never seen (or heard of) of a bittern until I saw your photos...I loved the first one you posted. My first thought was..."how in the heck did she see that????" I would have missed it completely! :)
