...please help me weed them down.

Gallery Selection

I'd like to thank everyone for their suggestions in my previous thread. I have tried to take a little from everyone's recommendations. I have also added a few others that I am fond of. My problem is that I now think I have too many selected.

Would some of you kind souls look through that gallery and suggest ones that DON'T belong, or fit in? I'd still like to get it down to about 10 - 12 8x10 or 11x14 prints to show them.

Thanks,
-danny

This is all personal. Did you know that there are people that you can hire to put portfolios together? That's all they do. Anyway. You landscapes are good. So they make a logical group. I like the color ones best.
Here's what I chose.
Group one color and curves:

Group two lines and distance:

"Outstanding isn't quiet like the other three but it's mood fits.

There are some exceptionally nice images in here. As a former working landscape/architectural photographer and teacher (UCSD) I have some very strong opinions of what should be weeded out. I'll come back to this when I have a little time, later, and go into it in detail.

well, since you asked which ones we think don't belong, i would venture out to say these.. but not sure how much my opinion matters, since i don't have experience with this sort of thing. here it is anyways..

and perhaps

they're all great images, but i decided those were by "bottom 3".. the egg is interesting though, and since you are looking to represent your overall style it might help to have something like this to get them away from the notion that you never set up your own shots (since i ruled out the blue one, anyways).. not sure if that is an important thing to pay attention to or not though, or if that's even what you would want to convey.

<-- this is is great, but something also seems off about the rock in the front. not sure why.

This image is actually part of a series. I have them matted and framed already. So I feel it belongs due to the fact that if completes the series.

That's basically the reason I included it. I wanted to show that I have color and ability to setup shots. I'm also thinking of shots that will sell in my 'touristy / antique shop' town, so that's why I wanted a decent variety of shots. I don't want to be just a 'landscape' photographer, but it seems most of what I shoot that I like, other than portraits, is landscape.

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Well today was the big day. I had a meeting at a local gallery here in McKinney called Otis Smudge. They are a gallery that displays and sells other artist's work. They charge a small monthly fee as well as a percentage of each sale in order to sell your work at their gallery. They are selective in who they allow display in their store and had an open calling for new artists. I have spent the last few weeks going over which images to finally take and selected most the ones seen in this photo.

Well the great news is, they accepted my work to be shown. What's funny was earlier in the day when I went in to make my appointment, one of the ladies said they usually don't make a decission on the spot, etc. So while I was showing my portfolio and talking with them, they said they wanted me to show! Bad news, they're having a big open house while I'm in France and they wanted me to have work to show. So I went and got frames and mattes for what I took for my portfolio so I'd have something to sell.

I don't know if this will all work out, but I sure am jazzed about it!

They won't be available to show until tomorrow I believe, then the big open house is this weekend. I won't be there for the open house, but I have several family and friends showing up as well as an email I got from a local High School teacher in my town:

Mr. Shaw,

I teach photojournalism at McKinney North High School and have a student that has great respect for your work (elsapo on DP challenge.) In fact, to improve his photo skills over a year ago I told him to join DP and watch your work. I just wanted to let you know that I read about your showing in McKinney and I will be offering my kids extra credit if they come by and take a look at some of the amazing things you are doing-- that is if you let me know that it is ok for teenage kids to be coming in to your opening. Please let me know soon.

Thanks-Rebecca Plumley

I'm really excited about the prospects and look forward to seeing them hanging on the wall in person.

Thanks for enquiring!

People are still named things like "Rebecca Plumley"?

And oh yeah, congrats on your show Danny. I'm sure you'll do great.
