The following is straight from a newsletter. I haven't tried the software but it sounds like something useful to have lying around, and it's FREE!...

Zero Assumption Digital Image Recovery v1.0 [619k] W9X/W2K/XP FREE

If you haven't accidentally formatted a Compact Flash card yet, chances are you will. When it happens to the prescious photos of your baby's first birthday, or that rare opportunity you had to meet some movie star in the airport, Zero Assumption Recovery will be waiting in the wings to save the day. Specifically designed to assist those of us with an itchy delete finger, the wizard-style interface will step you through the recovery process, aiding you in getting your important image files back as painlessly as possible. Current recoverable files include TIFF, JPEG, GIF, and Exif. The next time your images go missing, make no assumptions, just aim for recovery.

Another option, that isn't free is DataRescue I've used this to successfully recover about 200 files from a large CF card that got corrupted by win2k. It even recovered the files where the FAT was so corrupted by using things like fdisk/ scandisk etc that the normal recovery tools don't work.

I was very happy to pay the $30 for it to get those pictures back. Not sure if the other recovery program mentioned handles lower level physical media file recovery as well as using the logical drive information, but either are certainly worth having around. One of the shots recovered was my entry to the Leading Lines challenge - I'm happy to have paid the money to get 6th place!

*bump*

I would imagine this program scans the raw data looking for known file headers, which would explain why it only recovers a few file types.
If anybody ever has the need to use it, let us know how it copes!
