Two disclaimers about my upcoming comment:
1) I didn't enter and haven't had a chance to look at all the photos yet.
2) I don't own a pet dog or cat or anything.
Two words about the current challenge:
1) Snap
2) Shot

I've just glanced at them and haven't started voting, yet. They might be just snapshots, but I saw a lot of love in those photos! Seriously, I found them refreshing.
Good luck, Neuferland.

1. I did enter and have looked at all the photos
2. I own, or have owned, just about ever kind of animal represented in the photos
3. I agree with you completely -- most are snapshots -- including my own (I'm embarrassed to say).
4. Don't let the thumbnails fool you. I was very surprised to find some good quality photos in there after thinking that they looked like all the others from the thumbnail view. |

I agree about the snapshot comment, a lot of them are, probably mine included but I think it was a good challenge simply because people found out just how hard it can be to get a good decent shot of an animal without the snapshot feel. I've been working with animals most of my life and between them and children it near impossible to get a decent shot without a lot of effort. Why do you think most professionals won't shoot animals? At least not with their camera ;)

I didn't enter; I have voted on all of them, but have not yet commented. Lots of "snapshot" type photos, but I enjoyed all of them. And there are a few that really stand out from the crowd. Having 2 "pets" (more like kids) in our family, I always like to see peep's pet photos, and I have to agree, snapshot or not, the LOVE comes through! |

I am actually more comfortable with the animals. It is hard for me to photograph people! Especially a family member where I'm so emotionally involved with him/her. If I could have taken a photo of just the pet I would have done better. But I do agree with all that you are saying: it was a great learning experience and the love definitely shows through in the entries. I enjoyed the photos and voted them more on the capture of that love than the snapshot quality.
Jacko, I think of a snapshot as being a picture than anybody with a camera could have taken. Most of the photographers here have far more skill than that. -- as you have proved :) I just expect more than a snapshot from those of us who are here to improve our skill. Snapshots are fine -- just not in a photography contest. That being said, mine is one of the snapshots ;-) |

This is one of those challenge topics that is much more emotionally involved than things like wind, or broken, or low tech, or any number of the previous topics because we all (at least I believe in my heart) are so emotionally attached to the pets in our lives. They're like another one of our kids. I have zillions of snapshots of my kids, and likewise, of my pets as well. I'm sure you all do too. The nature of the challenge description actually kind of begs for a candid moment to be captured in that it asks us to "capture the affectionate relationships that exist between pets and their owners." Yes, 99% of the shots are snapshots (mine included) but there's a lot of love in them all. People are going to be very defensive about their snapshots and scores because of that. I have had a lot of fun voting, even if some of the shots are what most of you might consider subpar.
I think the challenge has asked us to capture a relationship in a photograph, which can be done in a snapshot. But that is just my opinion. Y'all might think otherwise. :o) |

Believe it or not, skill is required to get a good snapshot, just like it is required to get a good setup. Capturing the right moment, lighting, shutter speed, aperature, focus all have to be decided in a moment. You don't get 1000 chances to get the shot right. This challenge calls for a snapshot, just like the macro challenge called for a setup. People at dpc have become quite good at setups. We probably should have more snapshot challenges to improve our skills in that area. |

You make an excellent point. That's why I ended up voting more for the photographer's capture of the relationship rather than the actual snapshot vs. fine art quality of the photo. So, even tho I'm normally opposed to snapshots in a photography contest, I do agree with your thinking here. :) |

There are a couple of exceptions, but I gotta agree on this for the majority of entries.
I'm surprised that no one entered a photo of their pet rock.

A lot of the snap shot feel comes from living room shots - no thought as to background, lighting or composition.
See Spot. See Spot in viewfinder. SNAP!
Love is blind. they say. From the love in these photographs, the photographers were blinded by it.

I think most will agree.
Your pet will do the same cute thing over and over again until you have a camera in your hand! :(
