Ok I think this is one of the best photos I have taken, I know I will get grief about the purple sky but I think it fits with the feel I was trying to create.
So what do "you" think of my new photo?

I think its a great shot. The sky doesnt bother me... the only thing that looks strange is the portion of the roof that hangs off the big part of the barn... it seems fuzzy and out of focus for some reason. The roof over the small part of the barn on the left side of the photo looks fine. just my .02

Very nice, saturated colors and good composition. I like it, but... the edges of the roof look like washed off, except the low left part of the edge which is nice and black. Not sure about the frame. |

Very nice, Travis! That's one to be proud of!
As I said in the original comments, I love the perspective. The barn is overpowering, but it doesn't seem like it's taken at an odd angle or anything...
Great photo! |

Excellent colors, but I think what makes this photo is the wide angle perspective. Is the sky real? Looks like a gradient... |

Yes the sky is a gradient

i like it, its just that you can tell its 'fake'. the sky looks like it was heavily photoshopped on my monitor.

Quite enjoy it Travis; one suggestion though: after placing the gradient fill to do the wacky thing with the sky, try applying a pretty heavy gaussian blur to it - even at this resolution you can make out the step changes in intensity there.
Does this connect with your earlier PM then?
The other recommendation i'd make is to under-expose the original shot: it's a hell of a lot easier to bring things up to brightness than to do anything at all about the big bright white sky. For me you could also darken a little and increase contrast in the building and the grass areas. It could, I think, have just a touch more punch, and would happily carry that. And in the grass areas, the earth loses some of it's potential richness of tone from being fractionally too bright. |

I'm not a huge fan of editing, and it does look a little overpshopped. Seeing your original, my advice would simply be 'don't blow out the sky'. Although you did a good job of the editing, that's not IMO what photography is about, unless that's what you set out to do.
Aside from that, excellent composition and subject.

It's an interesting structure and at the angle you have shot it there is a sort of creepy feel to it. Have you tried it in black and white? I played around with it a little and it certainly formed an interesting dark mood. As others have mentioned, the dark blue gradient looks a little too strong for the image. |

Thanks again for all the helpful tips.
I have tried it in b/w but I think I like the purple sky the best.

Sky is more blue than purple on my calibrated LCD. Travis. Good Job very nice to see your learning curve on the D70 is very fast! I agree with the gaussian sky, can see the gradient currently, but I really like the shot regardless.

I like the colors and post. It could use a little bit of USM, otherwise it's just fine technically, imo. But the subject matter? |
