Hi everyone, this is the first time that I have ever posted a message as well as posted pictures. I am just starting to get into photography, and these shots were taken with my new Kodak DX 6490. So any comments would be greatly appreciated seeing as how I'm just a newbie :) Also all of the images were fixed up in photoshop, and some have had color saturation. Thanks - Dana

The 'favorite' one is my favorite -- looks like the flash was really strong. Maybe if there was a way to bounce it off the ceiling or if there was another lighting opportunity? (I'm not into people photography so I don't know much about it really).

The crops on the '1st' and '2nd' shots don't really work for me. The '3rd' one is good too but needs more light.

Welcome Dana! Your favorite shot is the most visually interesting from a composition standpoint. The real Scott appears a little overexposed, and agree with Deapee that different lighting might have worked better.

Shot #1 - handsome model! The reflection in the guitar is getting lost in the red color. Your selective saturation choice draws the eye to the guitar rather than the person - was this your intent? Perhaps if the entire image was in B/W the reflection might pop a little more, or you could do so Photoshop work to bump up the contrast. I'm not sure selective saturation is working here.

Shot #2 - the bag takes up as much of the image as the model. A stronger composition might have been to take the shot from 2 steps to your right, so that the bag wasn't directly in front of the model and taking up so much room in the frame. Again, your use of selective saturation draws the eye to the bag instead of the model. It looks like you are experimenting with selective saturation...did you try the image so that only the gloves had color? Again, I'm not sure selective saturation is working here. You might also think about doing some sharpening as the focus in this shot isn't as good as some of the others.

Shot #3 - Good capture of facial expression. Sometimes when you shoot a person in a black garment against a black background you get an effect called "floating head." I'm seeing a bit of that here. Good pose; the hands in the front add balance to the overall composition.

Shot #4 - selective saturation works the best here because it draws the eye to the focal point of the shot. Sometimes a shot is even better when the subject isn't dead center - I think this is one of those times. If you cropped this shot to exclude the blown-out leaves in the upper right corner, you might be even more pleased with the result. Try to keep the rule of thirds in mind if you experiment with the crop, and see what you think of the results. The leaves seem to be more in focus than the rose.

Hope this helps...
