my dad has been using my PC since his went belly up and now I am getting this pop up box
it only happens on web sites that have some type of ad in their site. So I do NOT get it at DPC, but when I go to DPReview or download.com I just get so frustrated because every ad wants me to log on....I have no clue what this is for.
I have scanned my PC with Norton antivirus, Xcleaner, CWS shredder, ad aware se, spyware doctor and spybot, I have rebooted countless times and not sure what else to do... some one help me or I am gonna put this PC out of its misery
oh yea, forgot to mention I get this pop up in IE, but get the same type of pop up in firefox, so yo mozilla hounds back off :P

James,
That site appears to be an ad server, so it's likely that there is some adware on the machine that is trying to connect. Have you recently updated both the Spybot and AdAware software (like in the past few days?)
If your Spybot version is older than about 4-6 months, you may have to install the newer version in order to get updates.

| You definitely have adware. If you Google that server name you'll see that it refers to on-line surveys that you take to win free stuff. If you have updated your virus definitions (engines, too) on Ad-aware and it still won't go away try deleting all your cookies and then re-booting. Beware that sometimes those sites update your registry and will re-install the cookie everytime you re-boot. Depending on what O/S you are using, it can be fairly simple to restore the registry to a last known good working condition. Even the oldest computers generally backup the registry and keep the last 5 days on the hard drive whether you booted it or not. If all else fails, you can configure your firewall to ignore access requests to and from that website server. Good luck! |

Download This:
//www.spychecker.com/download/download_hijackthis.html
When I had all my search engines hijacked, Adaware & Spybot Search & Destroy couldn't find the problem...this was the only thing that found the processes that were creating the problem- I think it could work for you because it targets all processes that are running. Once you get the log file, look over it & see if there is anything on there that brings up a red flag (like search assistant). Save the log incase you make a mistake & delete something you shouldn't - then delete what you're sure is not supposed to be running. Look for that server name when deleting, it should read "// (whatever the suspected server name is)" next to a process that is running.
Don't be surprised if you have to run Hijack This a few times to delete the process completely, malicious software usually has backup files that regenerate upon deletion. If that happens, run the computer in Safe Mode & run the Hijack This & delete the files from there- then restart the computer, go back on the interent & see if it is cleared up. If not, write down all the processes you think may be a problem (example: searchasst.exe<-- made that up as an example) and Google them to see if they are known Spyware programs.
Hope this helps. |

If you have purchased Spy Sweeper from Webroot, contact Customer Support and recieve the new update for version 3.5. (Yes it's officially released, trust me.) You'll have to call or file a problem ticket from their website, to recieve it currently. Once you have it, update your definitions. Should you then still have it, hit the report spyware button. Fill out the form WITH your email address in it, hit submit. Give them a day or two, but they should respond and assist you with a solution. If they don't, or you recieve a response you're not happy with, please let me know through a PM.
If you haven't purchased it, consider it. In this new 3.5 version it's helped me remove a strain of CWS that I've had for a few months and noone else could remove.
I know that's alot of steps, but I've never seen this sort of hijack before and I'm they'd be happy to help get you taken care of. |

haha -- I made the rules quite clear for my girlfriend (if it says DOWNLOAD or SAVE -- DO NOT CLICK IT!!!!!!!!!!!) Although every now and then she just has to open up something stupid that someone sent her in an email -- so I panic, update symantec, update my spyware thing and scan my computer lol.

Maybe you should add net nanny to that list...
I'd try clearing your cache, too.

Get the new version of Webroot spysweeper, which will help, but the program you really need to get is Panda Anti Virus Platinum. Junk Norton, it's worthless.
You can pick up Panda at Staples. You have to un-install NOrton to make it work, and trust me it's worth it. I had Norton updated, did a full system scan which said I was clean. Installed Panda and on the first scan it found over 40 problems. It finds and cleans everything and updates by itself about every day, sometimes several times a day.
