I did a macro for the "Lucky 7" challenge of 7 tiny peppercorns. People didn't seem to like it and I would think because of the extremely little DOF. I did experiment alot while shooting but liked the very shallow DOF best so I chose it. The question is, would the outtake shot done at f/32 have done better than the original?
Both done with the 20D, 70-200 f/4 with all Kenko extension tubes (36,20 and 12mm).
Outtake (large dof) - Submission (shallow dof)
Which one do you prefer? Would the Outtake have done better?

The second version works much better. The corns are too important to be out of focus.

I do like the larger DOF, but I think the pepper just was not that interesting, and thus the lower score then you may have wished for.
That is just my opinion. And I am wrong alot. :) |

Larger DOF was better, to answer your question. I think perhaps you are scoring lower than you otherwise might because of your subject rather than your presentation. Out of curiousity, what about these peppercorns made them interesting to you and inspired you to shoot them? |

I found it interesting to see a macro of these buggers to actually see the texture and the real shape, cause to my eye they are round little pellets. You are probably right though, most people probably don't view peppercorns as anything very interesting.... |
