I just had an experience that I hope was a one-off.

There is a photo in Yellow that I really like (surprised yet? Nope me either.)

Anyway, since I'm not the world's best typist, long comments take a bit of time for me. I just spent 5 minutes writing a comment for what I thought was the best photo in the challenge so far. I had drafted a realtively long comment telling the photographer how good the photo was, and highlighting everything they did right (probably pointless, as whoever took this knows it is good, but I was enjoying myself), and decided to click the favorites button.

The screen refreshed, and my comment was gone. If this is a one time thing, sorry for taking up forum space. If this is a bug, and it could go somewhere on the list to be fixed, I'd be grateful.

Best,

This one has been mentioned in the forums many times. Either click the favorites button first, or copy your comment before you make another move just in case you lose it.

Thanks, I missed that. I'll go start retyping.

Happened to me when the feature first became avaliable, so I have been clicking favorite first, then commenting. Pretty discouraging though, when it happens the first time and you have just finished writting the best review/comment ever.

I'll grant that my knowledge of web coding is limited, but I don't think this is fixable. The problem is that when you click the "add to favorites" button you are clicking a link, making a new HTTP GET request for a new page. This is how your browser tells the server to add that image to your favorites. Once this is done, your browser reloads the voting page (it's almost identical but the add to favorites becomes a remove from favorites button). I know of no way to carry the comments from the old page to the new one.

I'll pass it on to the admins, though, since they know web coding far better than I do.

I've done this before too. I just hit "undo" under the edit menu and it takes me back to the previous page ("undoing" my last action). My comment is there just as if I finished typing. Like others, I now copy my comment before hitting "favorite" and then paste back in afterwards.

I'm using a Mac by the way, don't know if the undo step will work on Internet Exploiter or other browsers.

Also be careful if it's taken you a while to type your comment; if your DPC session times out, you will lose the text. It's a known issue, and hopefull will be addressed. As posted, the best work-around at this point is to copy long comments & posts to the clipboard prior to hitting any buttons, including "post", just in case.

Thanks guys. I will keep these in mind. Sorry for the excess thread. I thought that the favorite switch would work like a radio button and get uploaded when the vote was ticked. I'll be more careful next time.

Wow, that's harsh. Maybe you could take a typing class at a local college or something or buy a CD from a software store. Being able to type fast really opens up a whole new world, and I can't imagine what it must be like to want to write something on the internet and have it take five minutes just to get it all on the screen as I've been typing like 90+ WPM since 9th grade when I took a typing class.

I've seen friends struggle with typing and I know this sounds stupid, but it's almost like a handicap. Before you can even get all your thoughts on the screen, your mind just has to be wondering other places.

Don't take that personal, please...just trying to say that maybe taking a class or a CD will quite possibly open up a whole new world for you!

Some Javascript could test to see if there is any text in the comments field when the favourites link is clicked... if there's text a warning message could ask for confirmation. Wouldn't take long to code. It's happened to me several times, drives you crazy!

you could just have the favorites function open in another window. Perhaps even one that closes itself after the task is completed?

well I've had the same thing happen to me several times. When this happens it's REALLY frustrating. Just a few moments ago a worse thing happend to me, I had just written a long reply to this thread about comment of the day with a lot of links and needed to fix one link ([ in wrong place) and when I clicked preview IE closed itself down and all was lost.

I am not sure if this is the same problem, but I will mention it here because the thread has been opened.

Also in the Yellow contest, it shows I have recieved 4 comments, but when you click on them there is only 3.

This might possibly have something to do with yesterday's brouhaha with "Mr. Slippers." I believe some of his spiteful comments were removed; it's possible the counter did not get decremented properly. There may be another explanation as well, but this is something I can point to that could be a cause.

Yep, this has definitely happened to me. I occasionally leave a tab on my Firefox browser open, because I want to look at a photo a number of times. Tnen I type my comment, hit the score, and move on. A couple images later , the same picture appears with no comment, as if I never typed anything. I guess I have to hit refresh. Just out of curiousity, how long before a DPC session times out? It must be relatively short, I think.

Another issue I have ran into, and it may just be my PC, but I semi-regualrly encounter an error when I try to preview a forum post which closes IE thus losing my post. This started happening a month or so ago after a site update, but I forget now, which one.

I just copy my posts before previewing now, but would be curious if anybody else is seeing this particular issue when trying to preview.
