I was just talking to the lady in charge of our BridesWorld expo in January. She was talking business, then when I said we weren't doing this years, but maybe next, she started talking to me like a real person. She ended up spending about HALF HOUR on the phone with me, telling me how to set up a booth, who sells the most at our local shows, etc. She also said bridesworld has NO photographers booked for the Syracuse show.
Will this help me or hurt me? On the one hand, it's exclusivity at this point. On the other hand, will it look weird if I'm the ONLY one there who does photography? Like I'm in the wrong place? I don't even know if we can come up with that money before the holidays, but damn it sounds like a good idea.

| Sheesh, our local bridal fair usually only has 2 or 3 photographers, and I think they have to shed blood to get in. |

Our Bridal Expo (twice a year) has literally dozens and dozens of photographers. Even more wait-listed a year in advance. It starts at $900CND for a 10x10 booth. Insane. |

At the large Bridal Expo here, I'm sure that's the case too. But here locally, they have a Bridal Fair that is fairly exclusive, where they feature one major designer, and they screen the photographers who will have a "booth" (which is actually a table!), only letting an exlusive few in. I like to go to this one to see the chosen photographers' work. (I met a photographer there about 5 years ago, and she is one of my favorite photographers ever. She does lovely work.) |

Hmm...they have NO photogs coming, but want to look good in presenting an Expo that covers all the bases for Wedding needs. When I was DJ'ing, if someone had presented a pitch like that to me I'm fairly sure I would have said something like, "So, how about cutting us a really good deal so that your expo has coverage on one of the most important factors in a wedding reception? We weren't really thinking about being there, but we could give a good representation if you'd be willing to cut the booth cost by 50%..."

If you have to make the phone call back to her, tell her you've been giving it some thought, $800.00 this close to Christmas is way more than the budget allows, but thought they would consider giving you a 50% break in the cost just so that the Expo has representation. ;-)

Our Bridal Expo has 10x10 booths STARTING at $1200!

I think that maybe this is a sign for you. I mean there will be hundreds of brides at this show and no photographers there and you have the chance to be the only one. That could totally be fantastic for you, as its a chance to show people what you are all about.
It is so soon though that it woul be hard to organise yourself by then. Do you have good portfolios set up? Because that is I guess what people look at,like your books and albums and stuff.
I guess I am just hoping that you get your break soon :)
Is it possible that she is only telling you that no photographers have singed up, so that you will sign up?

Well, if it is a Bridesworld Expo, perhaps you should be asking why they have no other photographers booked. Are they asking too much for the booth? Is there not the demand in the area where the expo is being held? Is there a problem with their expos?
Try the discount angle before parting with $800...you have nothing to lose.
Maybe I am too cynical, but I never trust these too good to miss deals!
If you are satisfied at the end of the phone call, and can afford it, go for it. But count to ten before committing. |

| If there are no photographers yet, why not ask for an exclusive deal. And if you like it this year, you'll do it for x# of years as long as you are exclusive. I used to do women's expos and my manager was always working with the organizers to get exclusive deals. It wasn't photography related. |
