I have my first big concert gig tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JAMES BROWN!

It's my first gig for the university paper...and here I am 'caught with my pants down'..ie no good lens. I'm calling the camera store now to rent one! Wish me luck!

Edit: Oh, what's the best lens? It's going to be pretty dark. And it's a free job..volunteering for the paper.

50mm f/1.4 & ISO 400. Good luck!

I thought that's how women are supposed to break into the music industry? lol

Whatever lens you bring, don't forget a tripod or monopod. At slow speeds you'll need one. And maybe some ear plugs, if you are real close.

Good luck. With your pants down, JB will let you on stage. ;)

A James Brown show should not be 'pretty dark'. I would get a 70-200 f/2.8.

I use my 70-200 in low light for band photos all the time and i would imagine that you will have more light to work with than I ever have... check these out:

Most of this stuff is low light and the exif info is available on most of it...

Edit.. wrong link.. here's the better one:

I'm just trying to think back to the last time I went to a concert in that venue..I can't remember how the lighting was..and I think I'll be on stage.

I would get the 70-200. If you get the 50, you won't have the luxury of tighter compositions. When you crop a high iso shot, you are going to bring the noise level out much more. Either one of these lenses will probably still require ISO 800 at a minimum and maybe 1600 depending on the light.

How does teh 10D perform at ISo 1600? Never had to use it before..atleast never tried with a good lens.

PS- i woulnd't rent a 50mm. Just buy one :) Buying that lens would probably be cheaper than renting the 70-200.

In the UK pants are the items of clothing between your skin and your Jeans.

getting caught with them down, would become an arrestable offence.......

Woah, I'm so jealous! I saw him at Glastonbury, and couldn't get anywhere near the stage... but the gig was just superb.

He's playing at the university (Mac Hall as it's known). For some reason alot of big bands play there even though it's relatively small. I'd say a few thousand capacity. I saw a Canadian band there last year (Treble Charger) and swore I woulnd't go back...the smells of vomit and BO still haunt me....

AHHH I'M ABOUT TO FREAK OUT!!

I called the camera store and the only canon zoom they have is the 70-200 which is out on repairs since someone broke it.

VISTEK does rentals but you have to put down teh full value of the lense. Which, if I had that sort of money or credit, I'd just BUY a lens.

So now what???? I've got an hour to figure this out.

What lenses do you have in your bag again?
12/08/2004 05:27:59 PM · #21
First, take a deep breath...

Bump your iso to 400 or better
Try Spot metering on the performer
Shoot as wide open Aperture as you can
Try to keep the shutter speed around 1/100 or better if there is a lot of movement going on

Good Luck!

Update:

The Camera Store = broken lens

Vistek = turned me down because I don't have $800 of available credit (half the value of the lens)

No other stores (at least that either were aware of) rent lenses.

I have a 75-300 IS USM F4 that I'll be taking. That's teh best I can do. It's slower, and won't be as bright, but it's either that or not go.

Buy the 50mm f:1.8

you'll be happy with it in the long run - it's light - fast and if you have enough light you may be able to shoot at ISO 400 ( stop faster than the 70-200 f:2.8 )

IF luck is on your side - then you also may have enough light for the 75-300 option as well.
