Lots of photography books use "depth of field" when talking about the range of focus in the frame.

A few things I've learned (or think I have but might be wrong so feel free to correct me):
As was mentioned, depth of field and depth of focus are very closely related. Obviously, a shallow depth of field will make a shallow depth of focus harder. For instance, if your subject is too close to the background then it will be harder to make the background look blurry. Keep this in mind when setting up studio shots.

Using a telephoto lens (increasing focal length) will obviously make the subject appear closer AND will make objects look closer together to eachother (or stacked on top of eachother) AND will decrease the dof.

If you want to maximize depth of field (for instance in a landscape), select a small aperture (big f number) and then set your focus a third of the way up from the bottom of the frame. If you set the focus in the center of the frame then you are more likely to have part of the picture (the foreground) out of focus.

Best simple explanation I've read. The fraction analogy clearly explains why 2.8 is larger than 16. The "plus 5" knowledge for digital use is an enormous find for me. I couldn't understand why my dof was so deep. Now I got it.

Thank you.

i'm surprised to see that depth of field and depth of focus are confused in this discussion. depth of field literally is how far from the nearest object is the furthest object. a short depth of field is from the lens to a wall five feet away, for example. a long depth of field is from the lens to a mountain some miles away.

depth of *focus* is what is nicely discussed in the article... depth of focus could be termed 'depth of acceptable focus', meaning a near object is in just as clear of focus as a far object. there are three ways to get additional depth of focus:

1) stop down the lens to a smaller f/ stop
2) adjust the focus ring to the hyperfocal setting, based on your distance from the nearest object
3) adjust (tilt) the lens relative to the film plane

more detail about these can be found in most photo books.

What you describe as depth of focus is what most photographic books refer to as the depth of field. Depth of Field is commonly accepted to be the region of acceptable focus in a print (and varies with amongst other things, print size). Hence the depth of field preview button on many cameras, and depth of field scales on older lenses.

Hi
Whether it be AP,SP, or PROG it all boils down to"exposure value".In other words how much light for what length of time is required to give a correctly exposed shot.

Hi Forgot to mention, if anybody has Microsoft EXCEL on their PC I can send them a spread sheet with a DOF program on.

In regards to using a white card to set white balance, should the card be glossy or matte?

Matte is better. Glossy introduces color aberrations when it reflects light sometimes.

Thank you for this tutorial! I've never understood dof in digital cameras, but you've made it so much clearer. Thanks so much! :]
