I've just submitted my entry for the landmark challenge.
When I view the photo from my HD I can see detail in the shadows. But when I view it from the DP web site I cannot see any detail.
This is the same file that I uploaded a few minutes ago, the 640 X ??? whatever, its not a higer res file from my HD.
Can anybody tell me why I cannot see as much detail in the shot from the web page???

First step is to open the file on your local hard disk using your browser, not your editing software, and see how it looks. There is probably a "color-space" or profile mis-match. |

It may have to do with the color space you used. sRGB seems to work best for me in that viewing through Internet Explorer and through Photoshop look the same. Not sure if this is the root cause, but it's my guess at the moment. |

View the photo from your hard drive how? With which program?
If you are using a color-managed application like Adobe Photoshop, and your monitor is calibrated (or you are using Adobe Gamma), then the colors in color-managed applications will look "better" compared to something like Internet Explorer, which is not color managed.
If you want to see what your picture will look like in IE while using Photoshop, select View > Proof Setup > Monitor RGB. Then use View > Proof Colors to toggle between color-managed and non-color managed views.
The other possibility could be what others have suggested, that the photo is in a different color-space (such as Adobe RGB) and needs to be converted to sRGB before being saved as a JPEG for uploading to DPC. There is some information on converting a photo to the sRGB color space in this tutorial.

You guys are soooo good, its like having a talking encyclopedia of all things digital right here, thanks.
It is of course the differences of the managed and non-managed colour space, (I never noticed it before!).
I've also read the tutorial, previously I was just going straight from PS to Save for Web and adjusting file size there. Then playing with the Quality to get as near to but under 150Kb.
The way of the tutorial is much more "scientific".
I had to go back and adjust levels a couple of times to get it to look the way I wanted, the save for web process just blackened the shadows, even though it was sRGB, anyway its OK now and awaiting that Blue Ribbon......(yeah right!)
Thanks, thanks and thanks guys....
