CANON

Canon came to this year's 2003 PMA show with a powerful new EOS D-SLR product line-up, they showed the new 10D, the 1D and the 1DS camera bodies.

The lower-end 10D and the higher-end 1DS are both CMOS cameras. Whereas, the middle line 1D is a CCD chip camera.

The 10D was impressive and very feature rich. But, it did feel a bit too plastic for my tastes. However, it must be noted that the camera has a chassis constructed of magnesium alloy and should offer years of service. The overall size and weight seemed OK for this camera and felt comfortable. My wife hates the size and weight of my Nikon D1x cameras and I suspect that she would really find this camera much more to her liking. Even with a nice size zoom lens mounted, it was easy to handle.

The controls are well laid out and there are many push buttons and dials to make adjustments. Not being a Canon camera user myself, I did not feel that the controls were very intuitive. But, I suspect that with a bit of time and experience with this new 10D camera, they would be second nature to any user, just like my Nikon controls are for me. The viewfinder and the LCD monitor displayed many settings and were easy to read, even with my very poor eyesight. The adjustable built-in dioptric correction for the viewfinder (-3.0 to +1.0 diopter) should be appreciated by our aging population.

The 10D offered a 6.3 CMOS chip, which offers a 15.1 mm x 22.7 mm active surface area in the 3:2 aspect ratio. The 10D camera is therefore not a full frame camera like its big brother - the 1DS, so it has a 1.6x focal length factor. In the raw mode, it will offer a 8.0 Mb file size when set at large / fine (3072 x 2048)

- 7-point auto focus system, with three distinct AF modes
- 35-zone AF point-linked evaluation sensor and triple metering system
- numerous modes of operation in the exposure with manual / aperture priority / shutter priority and a very sophisticated program mode with multiple scenario sub-modes
- total pixel count is at 6.52 megapixels
- JPEG and RAW file formats
- USB 2.0
- EXIF data
- viewfinder coverage is 95% on vertical and horizontal with JPEG large file format
- shutter speeds range from 1/4000 of a second to 30 seconds
- 1/200 of a second flash sync
- built-in pop-up flash 13 / 43 (at ISO 100 in meters / feet)
- continuous shooting speed is 3 fps at 1/250 of a second or faster for all file formats
- maximum burst during continuous shooting is 8 or 9 shots depending upon the shutter speed
- 1.8 inch, 118,000 pixels LCD monitor
- 17 custom functions with 61 settings
- 5.9 x 4.2 x 3.0 inches (149.7 x 107.5 x 75 millimeters)
- 27.9 ounces or 790 grams
- working temperature is 0 to 40 degrees C or 32 to 104 degree F
- accessories of the entire Canon EOS systems, very impressive
- Photoshop Elements 2.0 included

Thanks for the great review Morgan. I'll be getting the 10D in a few months. I'd like to have it one month before my vacation in early July = early June. :)

Anyone else here getting the 10D?

Maybe next year, a new motorcycle and a trip to Tibet or something like that are above the new camera on my list. ;)
