We should have a Woody Award...(:
Instead of a ribbon icon we should get a woody icon!

Woody For President!!

I'll vote for him. After all he got me my only top 10 finish with this shot

It's also one of my most popular stock photos, so not everybody hates Woody.

And his use by photographers goes all the way back to the great Man Ray (at least). So there must be something right about him.

I wonder if we could get Woody elected governor of California. He's like the Woodenator, he'll be back.

Hummm... I don't know if you saw the "humor" challenge, but as we speak, Woody is being held hostage and we might never see him again if the kidnappers don't get a ribbon!

So lets have a shot of the ashes James ...

... come on, no-one's going to believe your next threat unless you carry out this one ...

Or are you waiting for the third humour challenge?

Hi, my name is Linda, and I am a Woody hater.

(OK, not REALLY a hater, but the darned things annoy me.)

Those little figures are, no doubt, a handy learning tool. So use them to practice, but don't inflict the practice sessions on the rest of us! A woody cannot generally get higher than a 4 when I vote.
This is my impression: seems as if the photog doesn't think enough of the venue to make a better effort.
I am sure a lot of work and preparation goes into some of these woody shots, but it is a wasted effort to present the results on DPC, I just don't like them!
All that said, if someone presented a truly unique and beautiful shot using a woody, I probably would give it a decent score.

And because you don't like them, it is a wasted effort?

I guess my opinion on the issue, or anyone else's, doesn't really matter?

My opinion is mine whether you like it or not. Perhaps I am under a mistaken impression that this venue is for expressing opinions about photography.

Guess I must be weird but I actually like a lot of the Woody shots. Some of them are so cute and clever and very well done. It is a way of showing emotion in a photo that works well in a lot of cases.

It is. It's just that "It is a wasted effort to present the results on DPC" reads more like a statement of fact than a personal opinion.

El...I started this thread as I personally can't stand these dolls, but the reality is you can't discount a picture simply because there is a woody (doll that is) in it... From reading your thread you state that you rarely score above a 4 unless it presents a truly unique and beautiful shot, which I interpret as a negative bias compared to any other non-woody image.

Here are some woody images that have actually done quite well...
6 out of 112
26 out of 122
20 out of 108

...and there are several others. I cringe everytime I see these damn things, but after taking several deep breath, I get over it (temporarily) and judge it fairly based on relevance to the challange, composition, etc., etc.

P.S. DPC needs a support group for the likes of El and myself to overcome our dislike of these DAMN WOODY's!!!!

SOME DPC HISTORY...

On behalf of myself and all the other Woody haters, I would like to NOT thank Remie and magnetic9999for being the first two to use the now infamous Woody on DPC!!!
Remie was first on April 26, 2002 Damn you Remie
Magnetic9999 was second on April 28, 2002 Damn you Magnetic9999
You have started something that has physically and emotionally drained many DPC members and registered users.
Thank You :o(

A photograph from my favs list:

Woodies are like pets, kids, sunsets and all the other well worn cliches. A photographer can use them to create an excellent work of art. Or, they can be the sole subject of a snapshot.

After spend the last hour trying to get an obstinate 9 year old to follow simple instructions so I might get atleast 1 photo. I can't wait to to get a couple of woodies. I may even try to trade in the 9yo. Woddies do as they are told and are incapable of saying "I can't"
