I have a feeling I am in the minority here, but since there seems to be an air of change in the wind lately, just thought I'd ask if anyone else would like to have each challenge provide the choice of basic or advanced editing. This would conceivably reduce the numbers entering a particular challenge, and people could zero in on what is most appropriate for themselves. Any comments or interest in this type of set-up?

Great idea, I all for it.

Personally, I'll have to chew on this idea a bit and consider all the implications but at first glance it seems like a really innovative possibility!

Great idea!

Kylie, I like it! I second the motion. Let's vote :D

(okay, okay, I know that we're technically not a democracy here -- I just got a little carried away because I think it's such a good idea)

An Advanced challenge, by it's very nature, gives the person submitting the option of using Advanced or Basic editing. So, we're talking only about the Basic (i.e. "Open") challenges. One of the major arguments against doing this would be that it would dilute the perceived "value" of becoming a member. That is, those who feel frustrated by the confines of Basic editing rules, would no longer be compelled to become members.

Like above, I don't see this working well for the member's challenges, but would be a welcome addition to be able to enter an image into all challenges with the editing needed to make them their best.

But, other than just wanting it, I don't see that it adds anything significant to the site in terms of improving the ability of those entering the challenges.

I'm not sure about having the choice for each challenge, but I'd like to see some open challenges with advance editing and some member challenges with basic editing just to shake things up a bit.

As an example, I am a member, but would love the choice of competing with only basic editing. I would like to see the images stand close to how they were taken - it really helps me separate the photography learning curve from the software. I am so surprised when I see some the original images and how far removed the later versions are. This IS NOT about good vs. bad, just a chance to see them this way and "compete" on that level if you choose to.

As a member, you CAN participate in basic only challenges. Just go to the challenges that are basic editing and submit, just like you would for members challenges.

I agree that doing this would take away from the incentive to join DPC as a member. I have made mention before that I would like to see something, (perhaps a one off invitational challenge), with no editing whatsoever, other than a resize to fit the 640 format. Let's see what we can do with just a camera.

Lets make it fun for all - same topic, but a no-edit and an unlimited edit and see what turns up. If the members are more traditional vs editors then the entries in no-edit should out number those in unlimited. And if someone gets too digi-arty then the voters (again, assuming true photophiles) will get to give out 1s.

Call it a Christmas Present to us all. Make it a Free Study as well..or is that going just TOO far?

I like the occasional constraints imposed by shooting for the basic editing rules. Often creativity lurks within the more restrictive limitations.

I don't like them all the time and certainly don't use them in my normal photography but there is a value in making you think differently occasionally. Perhaps I think the selection of challenge topics could be more intelligently tied to the rules being applied on occasion, but partly that is a personal decision, e.g. impressionism.
