Well, I gave up on a dSLR last year when I got my Fuji 602. I was saving for a Digital Rebel, even though Canon equipment and I do not get along.
I became interested in teh D70, and while at Ritz today I see with a rebate the body is only $899 (with $100 Nikon rebate)...well below the $1299 I last heard it cost.
I can begin wishing...and saving again. Perhaps sell a few things...postpone a computer upgrade...

The $1299 included the kit lens. Body only was always $999 I believe.

Ritz has a 2 lens kit (Sigma) for $1229...
Gotta start saving.

If you're going to get a kit, I would highly suggest getting the Nikon kit with the Nikkor 18-70mm DX lens. Absolutely worth the money.

I've been watching the D70 too and even see Nikon marketing it heavily on TV also.
10D or D70 - may be be a coin toss on this one.
Wish I was in better graces with Santa....

10d a d70 are almots the same camera, except one is made by nikon and one made by canon. I elected to buy the d70 because I have used nikon before, I am happy with my choice. Now I all I have to do is learn to take photo's.

There are deals to be had on the Digital Rebel if you look... recently Dell had a deal where you could get it with the kit lens for $999.00 - 15% off sale - $25 coupon = $824.15 shipped FREE, subtract Canon's $100 rebate takes the cost down to $724.15(!!!). The 15% off and free shipping promotion may still be continuing, but you'd have to check for the additional $25 off coupon.
Check sites like techbargains.com to stay "in the loop" on good deals, especially this time of the year...
Remember, it is the glass that is important, you can always upgrade your body down the road. If you buy good glass now, it will last through many future body generations. I'd rather shoot with a Digital Rebel and really good glass than a 1Ds Mark II with crappy glass...

Didn't you put a Lensbaby on your 1D mkII?

LOL! Touché! But my statement holds true; I'd much rather shoot a Digital Rebel with a 70-200/2.8L IS than a 1D Mark II with a Lensbaby! =] |

The D70 is amazing. You are dangerous now. I can't imagine what you would be able to do with the D70. |

You can get the D70 at Ritz online with the kit lens for $1199 (after $100 rebate, no sales tax, no shipping and no payment until March 2005 if you order by tomorrow (the 30th). I may finally take the plunge.

i would recommend ordering from ritzcamera.com as well. you save on the sales tax, and if you have problems with the camera, they still allow you to return/exchange at any ritz store. so you get the same benefits of buying in store, but save on your sales tax.
i would suggest that you get the 18-70DX kit lense, as it's a far superior lense to the ones that come in that 2-lense sigma kit. you can always pick up a 70-300 sigma or nikkor G lense for very short money later. the 18-70DX is well worth it.

Ditto on the DX kit lens reccomendation, but I'd suggest for a telephoto zoom you consider saving a bit longer and going with the 80-200 ED f/2.8. It's *way* nicer than the 70-300 G f/4-5.6. Heavier, but much sharper, and with the faster lens you can add a teleconverter and loose only 1-2 stops to bring you out to 1.4 - 2.0 multiplier (280 - 400mm depending on which TC you get). You wouldn't want to put a TC on the already slow 70-300. Another option would be the new VR zoom which gets you out to 400mm, but it's not a very fast lens. S'up to you, but I think that with tele zooms it's important to go with high end since they're much more complex optical intstruments.

Well I pulled the plug today and ordered the D70 w/ 18-70 kit lens from Ritz! For a long lens I ordered the new Tamron AF 28-300mm F3.5-6.3 XR DI LD ASP. I know it is not the best and will be slow but it will do me until I can afford a fast Nikon VR.
Should all be here in 7-10 days. Yahoo! |

keep in mind a lot of those 'deals' sites that sell you the kits or bodies for ultra-low prices, often sell grey-market stuff, or they sell you a body with no battery, manual, strap, charger, etc...
personally, i would recommend staying away from those kinda sites for buying something like a dSLR body.
congrats on your new d70 :) good luck with it, i'm sure you're gonna love it!

Well, given this some thought and talked with the bank (da wife). Since reading in another thread that the top 2 ribbon winners on this site use pro-sumer non-dSLR cameras, I have no 'proof' i need the camera to get ribbons.
Also, If i wait a year (or less..) I may get one used or on closeout when the new model comes out and pay 1/2 as much.
Perhaps I haven't earned the 'right' to have a better tool because i am not useing my current tool very well (no ribbons, consistent mid pack scores)
