I was wondering (for those of you professional enough to have porfolio experience) what you would recommend in terms of portfolio work. I am a graphic designer, digital artist, and video artist as well as a photographer. I was wondering what you would recommend as a well rounded photography portfolio and how you would present them in the digital age. Are there websites that you recommend that are free or cheap to upload your work to and would you recommend seperating them into categories and having them all in a template with info about them and the name, etc. I'm not really sure what I'm asking. I guess for advise on how to make a stunning arts portfolio that can land you a job after you've gone through all the trouble and spent all the money on what seems to be an almost useless degree. :) maybe this should go in rant!

actually for getting a job, well-rounded is not necessarily what you want. most professional photographers have a couple of portfolios that show different styles and then show the appropriate ones to potential clients. the demands of fashion or product or nature photography can be quite different from each other, so you don't want to put them all together in the same book and have your work look unfocused. Just put together 15-20 photos, no more no less. |

thanks jblharshaw! Ok. I'm pretty interested in everything, although specifically in nature. A bit in fashion, but more in a design sense than the actual photography to accomodate it. Would you suggest a portfolio for each to submit to different potential employers, each with 15-20? It's not that my work is unfocused, it's that I'm young and have had no previous reason to limit myself. |

Yeah, consider what kind of work you're trying to get into, and send an appropriate book, which may well mean making multiple books, especially if you're interested in the disparate fields of fashion and nature. also, try to get work as an assistant to a photographer. it's a good way to get your foot in the door and really get a good sense of how the industry works. |
