I gave it a 5. Why? I thought it was too much about the headlight and too little about the body of water. If the front of the building was more in the shadow, occupied less of the frame, and the water was smoothed out in longer exposure I would score it higher.

I gave your entry a 6, nice but not quite a 7. I think the foreground was too prominent, if you got closer to water and a bit higher (drone) I would vote higher. There is also a bit too much sky for me. I would score your outtakes lower considering the topic and visual interest.

Thank you for that. I was concerned it was too much lighthouse and not enough Casco bay.

I am not complaining about my 5th place, but I can't help wondering if either of my drone shots would perform better?

Lev, you chose the right one.

Johanna, I hope you don't mind but I have played with yours:


Your outtake had two conflicting objects of attention, I think it would be better to chose between them. For the body of water the body in the water would probably do better :)

MargaretNet It didn't turn out how I wanted, but it was fun to do. The guy just randomly decided to do a headstand in front of me.

I thought an "outtake" here at DPC meant an image you considered for a challenge but decided against in favor of one you thought was stronger?

You normally post outtakes to find out if they would have done better in a challenge. That's what I thought was the purpose of these threads. It looks I wasted my time and probably won't try to contribute again.

Don't know how you came to that conclusion. It was my alternate choice and I decided to enter another one I thought would do better.

My entry didn't fare well at 5.33 and 56th of 77:

Would any of these have fared better, or was this challenge not for me this time round?

I think you made the right choice, though I might be biased because it reminds me of one of my own favorite pictures. :-)

GeneralE. I was your average voter with a 5. I really liked the soft graduation of the sunset and the silhouetted hillside. I didn't much like the processing of the water (which was the point of the challenge) and also dinged a point for your off-kilter horizon. I prefer the water of your out-take - and also see that you straightened the photo.

@ SaraR. I’m not sure I would have scored it higher than your entry, but I think the average DPC voter may have preferred Cape Cornwall.

@ GeneralE. I prefer Mt Tam mostly due to the color of the sky

Thanks Penny - I have just picked up my camera after a very long hiatus and I suspect haven't yet fully got my eye back in. But I am enjoying photography again.

ok I'll bite.

This was my entry . 36th place and score of 5.7667.

But I had this one in until last minute when I decided it might not be enough about the water (sorry it was hidden).

Definitely your entry. It was all about the Body of Water, it had gorgeous toning, it was calm and peaceful. I'm somewhat biased as I was one of your 7s.

Thanks Sara. I had a color version of the one I entered too (it's gone now) but I liked this one way better.

"Final" outtake:

I had to really work at this - Nebraska and body of water is always a challenge and in the middle of a very dry summer, well you can guess. But I visited a local lake and a week later a nearby wetlands preserve and managed to have several outtakes. The one I'm posting was my team's preference, I think (we all agree that, eventually, ya gotta go with what YOU like the best). I went with my gut. I suspect the outtake would have done almost exactly the same thing.
