Voting out of the box was hard but it worked for me. I gave out at least one of every vote and I received at least one of every vote! It feels like a win.
Post it here if you had a similar experience.

looking at the distributions, it really does look like people voted differently, and in my opinion, it's a better way to vote. |

I agree that it spreads the scores, but...
I judge each entry on its own... not compared to the other entries.
If we MUST use all of the scale, then I have to say, "Well... is this one better than that one?"
I don't like that.
That means that someone who would have gotten a six is going to get a five. Someone who would have gotten a six is going to get a five because I have to give someone a five... and so on...
I don't think that's fair.
I rarely see an image that is worth less than a five.
I start at six and judge from there.
But, I judge that particular image on its own merit... not according to how good (or bad) the other entries are.
I hope that makes sense.
Was it a fun "one-timer"? Yep.

I'm curious Don, is that the way you vote all of the time, using the full scale of 1-10? If not, why not?
It is suggested in the Voting Rules, under you must: "rate entries on a scale of 1 to 10. A score of 1 is a “bad” photo, and a score of 10 is a “good” photo". Many, many, years ago that was more of the case here, but nowadays the middle of the pack voting is more common (4-7).
This certainly can be an interesting conversation. |

Generally, I vote from 4 to 7 on my first run through (3 if something really stinks). Then I go back to bump up the good ones as needed, all the way up to 10. Technically I should go back to the 4s and bump them down, but I don't bother. It's not as instructive to me to think about the difference between a 3 and a 1. I'm not as edified by finetuning my appreciation of badness.
So that was the difference in this challenge. I went back and bumped down the 4s. |

My scoring method (your mileage may vary): I give 1's for blatant, not even close DNMC. I give 2's and 3's for maybe meets the challenge in some warped universe and I feel bad giving it a 1. I give a 4 for a bad photo, something OOF, poorly composed, or really uninteresting. 5 is average compared to others. 6-9 are for the photos I really liked, were technically well done and fully embrace the challenge, especially any constraints imposed by the challenge. I only occasionally give out 10's. I save those the WOW photos.
I would not want to always vote the 1-10 scale using a bell curve or even linear distribution. Those who have been around for a while know that there was a lot and lot and lot of discussion about low scores with hurt feelings and such in the past. We should never go back to that state of affairs. |

I started this thread this morning just to share my little burst of joy I got from this voting exercise and was hoping others had a similar experience.
For those of us who actually cast votes for the challenge, it probably did feel different than usual voting. Maybe something was learned but I seriously doubt that any of our habits will change just because we did this once. Was it worthwhile? Who knows. Was it fun? I thought it was interesting.

Thanks Don. Your follow-up comment on your voting process sounds about like the general norm I think. Appreciate the feedback. |

I vote a little differently, 5 ordinary, 6 a little extra something, 7 very nice but not extraordinary, 8 really, really good, 9 extraordinary and 10 My favorite of the challenge and sometime more than one. On the other side 4 if it doesn't meet the challenge and unless I find it offensive or totally doesn't meet the challenge or it is just a blob of nothing, I look for details in black dark areas. Anything below that I don't vote on that image or I stick with 4.
My feeling is that most of us have pride in our work, I understand sometimes we rush something out or have just been working on it to long to have a balanced opinion. People work hard on these images and search for creativity in the images. So I try to be fair, I hope people will vote and vote fairly, DP is such a special place, and so many good people here. We are all Lucky, very Lucky to have a place like it. |

I am with you. 5 is my baseline. I assume that people have put thought, time and effort into their images. I will go down to 4 if I think technically it is really not good (a LOT of (inappropriate) noise, over saturation, over sharpening, colour fringing, etc.), very rarely a 3 when the image looks to me like their 3 year old pressed the shutter by mistake ;-P.
I give a 10 when I "like" it and it is beautifully presented. So my 10s are just subjective - sorry :-(, but isn't all voting subjective? :-).
What I would LOVE to see implemented is that you have to comment on scores below 5. I know this has been discussed over and over in years past, I still would love to have that. As a learning tool. Like Anita posted her jogger - why give a 3? If the person doesn't like B&W ... ok, you just ignore that score, but if there are valid reasons, it's great to learn. Unfortunately most of the time when someone specifically posts an image for discussion and clarification, the high scorers reply - LOL.
My little dog got 1,2 and 3 ... I am curious "why" that's all. Try to be better next time :-). |
