Greetings...

I have a couple questions about using my Wacom Graphire 3 4x5 tablet...

I am having a problem that I can't seem to resolve. I bought this tablet primarily for the purpose of signing my name on digital photos. When I use the pen, there is some sort of proximity/pressure issue that I am unable to resolve. In photoshop, if the pen is close enough to the tablet to register, it will draw when I have the brush tool selected. The pen doesn't actually have to be touching the tablet for it to draw, which makes it nearly impossible to 'write' legibly with the pen.

This problem does not seem to be just in photoshop. If I use the pen on the windows desktop, it starts making a selection before the pen tip touches the surface of the tablet also. Does anyone know how to adjust this sensitivity?

Did you install the "Wacom Tablet" control panel?

With my Intuos tablet, there is a multitude of settings in this control panel, which can be set up on an application-by-application basis.

One of the tabs is "Tip Feel", and if you click on "More Options", there is a "Reported Pressure vs. Tip Force" graph that adjust the "Click Force". The easiest way to adjust it is to draw in the box at a pressure you are comfortable with, and it will adjust the settings automatically.

That being said, mine is a totally linear graph with a click occuring at force "6", and I have no problem using it as a "regular mouse", pushing slightly harder to "select" and using the button on the side for an easy double-click.

Turns out that the pen is defective. I talked to Wacom and they were going to send me a replacement pen, but after I told them the rest of the story, they said I needed to go back to B&H, which I have done also.

It appears that B&H sent me a tablet that had already been returned to them as defective. The pen stand and the software bundle CD was missing from the package when I got it, so I knew it had been opened already. B&H is exchanging it for me, but they would not do an advance replacement for me without me buying a new one and then taking a credit when they received the defective unit back. This is fairly normal policy but I had hoped for a little more since I have spent nearly $10k with them in the last year.

This is the first time I have had any problems with B&H and it will not affect me doing business with them in the future.

I agree this is "normal" policy, primarily to prevent theft (never sending back the busted one), but maybe consumers should start demanding institution of a "restocking charge" when they credit the card for the defective unit, since we have been deprived of the use of our credit line for a substantial period of time due to something entirely their fault/responsibility.

There is a good alternative to this type pf policy. You give them your CC number and they do NOT charge it unless they do not receive the unit back within X time period and in acceptable condition. Epson recently did this with me on a printer exchange, and I was very appreciative.

I was just a little disappointed :) I was looking forward to trying it out. They are supposed to be emailing me a return shipping label for the defective unit. If that comes tonight, they will not get my bad one back until Monday probably. If they ship me a replacement on Tuesday (not holding my breath on that one), my replacement will be here next Thursday...
