I rarely ask about my outtakes, I simply chalk up my score as a learning experience but based upon some comments I would like to ask what you think. Is the outtake better and do you think it would of scored better?

Note if you were drinking a Coca-Cola while voting on this picture, you are looking at the grave of the inventor of the Coca-Cola formula. [John Pemberton Ă¢€“ 1831-1888, Originator of the formula for coca-cola.]

The outtake is not any better IMO. I found your origianl to be kind of blah. With so much of hte scenery, there is little detail telling my why I should care about htose stones. The outtake replaces scenery with sky, not telling why that shot is interesting. Note, not bad, just blah.

i liked the shot u submitted but i think bolth would have benifited from a contrast adj.

the shot u submitted was great and i think lots of the ppl (myself included) who submitted were hurt by not getting views since the challenge was so big (638shot).

Hi Scott,

You mentioned in your post that this was the grave of the guy who invented Coke, but it's hard to tell that without your explanation. Considering the challenge was Black and White, your shot has decent tonal range. One thing you could have done to strengthen this shot is to pick out the one stone you wanted to showcase and making that a focal point. Right now, each stone competes with the others for the viewers attention. Alternately, you could have added visual interest by choosing an angle where the stones themselves created "lines" to draw the viewers eye to the particular stone you thought was most interesting, or used a couple of other stones along with depth of field to "frame" the stone that was your focal point.

I'm not sure the outtake would have scored better, but that's just me.

Thanks everyone for your comment. I have learned a good lesson with this challenge. The lesson is you can take a good picture [in this case] and make it bland, confusing, and just down right dull if you donĂ¢€™t compose it correctly. About mid-way through the challenge I began to see that and your comments here in the forum has confirmed what others were saying and I learned. Comments help tremendously, especially in a picture like this, which I feel if I would of composed properly with more detail and focus on the subject may have scored a point higher.
Thanks everyone for your input, it will make me try harder.
