Absolutely right, Discraft. When I'm out shooting, I often find myself thinking about previous challenges and what I can apply from them to the shots I'm taking. I never would have thought of most, if not any, of those ideas without learning them from people here at DPC or from the challenges.

Impressionism is a good example, as well as such simple things as composition, DOF, and that really cool ethereal glow thingy that DSidwell has popularized here.

Another satisfied customer... good to have people post the pluses as well as the minuses... right now i better start learning before EVERYONE on this site becomes better than me.

I really like that style of picture and i always thought you had to use NI to get it but I guess I just suck at Photoshop for now but I WILL GET BETTER... hehehehehe, wishfull thinking

PS - Phill I think we should arrange a Japan meet with Members who live here I think there must be 4 or 5 at least.

I have learned a lot from this site in the few months I have been a user. I learned a lot from users as well as the photographs posted. Just today I was introduced to contrast masking. I knew nothing about it because I am a PS dummy. So to all that has took the time to critique, vote, answer questions, offer support, or just make us laugh here are there, THANK YOU!

When I signed up in March, and then paid a membership in April, I didn't know an f-stop from my arse...and had never heard of photoshop before. Now, I actually do know what I'm trying to accomplish from time to time and I have more fun taking pictures than I have ever had with any other hobby in my life. I know I usually talk too much and have a lot of differing opinions on things from many folks here, but this is like a 2nd home and the impact upon my life that this whole new world of photography has opened up to me has been nothing short of miraculous. I owe a lot to this site. Thanks for being a great, supportive, friendly, and nurturing community!!!

Now here is a thread I can relate to . . . . positive and thoughtful. A huge thanks to the great community here that I have been lucky enough to interact with. The rest I just ignore as much as possible!! LOL

Its so often the things we have learnt that we forget.

I was a great photographer before I came to dpc to discover that I was only better than my mum.

I have learnt that composition is something different than what my english teacher was trying to make me write.
That F stop is not a short way of writing full stop.
That aperture has nothing to do with how high you are flying.
That the rule of thirds was not dreamed up by Uri Geller.
That there are other forms of photography other than snapshots.
Backgrounds do count.
Focus does count even if you can tell what it is.
Photoshop is not a place you go to to buy photos.

I started with high hopes and quickly became frustrated and disalusioned. I wasn't improving in score even though I was taking my best photos ever (Sound familar). Suddenly it seems to be happening, I have 2 PB's in 2 weeks and that makes me happy. I have 7 photos in a row over 5.0 score.

I didn't do this myself it is through all the direct and indirect help that people on this site have offered to me or others that I have read in the forum or tutorials.

So my thanks to all of you, wether you commented, linked, judged, helped, wrote or mentioned something that might be of interest and especially my silent mentor!

I'm starting to get it!

Alright.......now I'm getting that warm and squishy feeling as well. I also have learned alot from the composition of the images and the input of the memebers on this site. I'm confident that I have a good grasp of what a good shot should be, but the mechanics and the terminology are still rather daunting. This other element called "photoshop" is a whole other area that needs a great deal of attention and will require at least 75 packs of smokes and 40 gallons of coffee to master. I admire the diversity of the contributors and am playfully entertained by the sh*t disturbers. So what has this done to me as a person?? Well...I've learned to enjoy eating Kraft dinner since the purchase of a D70 is far more important than nutrition and my new mantra is:

Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day...........Teach a man how to take photos of people who have learned how to fish and he'll starve but have some cool shots when they find his body =O

Better make that about 750 packs and 400 gallons of coffee.

Yeah, I do some but its boring business stuff. When I do that type of writing, I have to come across intelligent. Here, I just get to be myself. Thanks.
