I got a kitten about 3 1/2 weeks ago. His name is Tungsten. I've taken a bunch of pics of him and added them to my portfolio. I know cat pics are taboo, but I couldn't resist. :^)

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Ara

Cat pictures are never taboo. Poorly composed cat pictures in challenges on the other hand are not so good. ;)

He's adorable. Has he started running away from the flashy box yet?

What a bunch of cuteness, Ara!!!!!!! Love those!!!

He is one pretty cat. Is he a mixture of abby and siamese? Can't wait to see some when he's all growded up!

Thanks all! :^)

blemt: He's not running away from the camera yet, but I haven't flashed him yet either, so we'll see...

pcody: He's a Tonkinese. The breed started as a Siamese/Burmese mix.

Congrats Ara.....he's very beautiful, and looks full of mischief! Love the closeups of his face with the tongue.

I do look forward to seeing pics of him as he grows/changes. Their body shape/language is amazing....trying to capture that essence, not just a pretty pic is a real challenge.

very cute. some things I would do if it were my shot
1. maybe reshoot for a better angle & compo
2. Use levels to make the BG white & then
3. Use curves to get rid of the shadow

Is it yours?

suemack: Thanks. Mischief? You mean like jumping off my lap, onto my keyboard then up to my monitor to chew on some papers up there? Well, yes, he's full of it.

rooster: Thanks. Yes, it's my new cat. Which pic are you referring to? The thumb takes you to a portfolio page with 12 shots. I don't think I can make the BG white w/o blowing out the highlights on the right side.

hey,

you can use adjustment curves & use the paint brush to bring back the parts that get blown out by it.
jealous of your new cat tho!

I can fiddle with curves, but I'm not great with it. But, I don't understand what/how the paint brush would work to bring back the blown highlights. Is this in Photoshop? Can you tell me how/what to do?

Nose Guard is well done...but Intent Profile is exceptional! Nicely done.

Thanks, that's my favorite too.

Added a new one. Mostly like the color contrasts in this one. The light is more even but much darker. Glad I shot RAW, I had to push the exposure +1.75 to make it look normal.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Ara

Thanks! Lighting in the final one? Sunlight from the window he's in front of. It's mostly a front-lit shot because he's in a shadow and most of the light was reflecting off the floor and my bed. At that point the whole corner he was sitting in was acting like a big softbox.

heida, given your mastery of burning and dodging, do you have any suggestions/ideas for improving these photos? I'd really appreciate any advice you could give.

Just to further pimp my cat, Tungsten, I've revived this thread with a newly posted shot from the 2nd Random Photo thread.

Left you a comment in your portfolio. Why are cats considered taboo? I love cat pictures. Could you tell me what the DP has against cats?
