I think that the forums should be moderated more strongly and if you slander, or make derogatory comments to a certain race, religion, country, sexual orientation or anything like that, you should be dealt with directly.

It's ridiculous the number of nations out there that hate America and Americans...and before someone tells me that they have the freedom of speech here in America, I already know that. But please, everyone, keep your racist comments to yourself.

Can't we have a nice, heated debate about a topic without generalizing people's race or nationality in a racist, discriminating manner? That is ridiculous.

The site's terms of service to prohibit such posts, and those terms are strictly enforced:

4.2 You will not use the DPChallenge.com Service to post content or to design, manufacture, market or sell a Product that (i) infringes the rights of a third party, including, without limitation, copyrights, trademarks, patents, trade secrets, rights of privacy and publicity, (ii) is libelous, defamatory or slanderous, (iii) condones, promotes, contains or links to warez, cracks, hacks or similar utilities or programs, (iv) contains explicitly sexual content, (v) does or may denigrate or offend any ethnic, racial, gender, religious or other protected group, through use of language, images, stereotypical depiction or otherwise, (vi) is designed to or does harass, threaten, defame or abuse others, (vii) exploits images or the likeness of minors, (viii) encourages the use of drugs or the under-age use of alcohol or cigarettes or (ix) is generally offensive or in bad taste.

I'm pushing for a tool that will allow users to more easily report such posts (so we can act on them more quickly). In the meantime please feel free to report such posts to myself or any member of Site Council. I can't promise immediate action (we do sleep and go to work, you know), but we will act on them as quickly as we can.

Thanks,
Terry

I really don't think the comment that you were refering to (I read the thread) was racist at all. No offense, but I think you need to be a little more tolerant and not blow things out of proportion.

Just my opinion. :)

Thanks for the quick response.

cbeller, I hear you. Well, I'm not going to repost what was said as it's like beating a dead horse at this point -- what was said was said.

The poster has since edited the post and taken out the remark towards Americans.

----

I'm sorry if I seem to take things to heart, but just because America is 'the big guy' doesn't make it ok to say things about them. Picture the term 'Africans' in place of where it said 'Americans' and you'll get my point.

Americans are pompous and arrogant....no way.

PFFT, we are, and we are also a bit touchy. The guy meant no harm.

sigh -- I'm just going to bite my tongue and walk away. It's not worth it.

I agree, this is a horrible double standard. I am sick of being put infront of a firing squad because I'm american. Freedom of speech does not give anyone the right (even you haters in other countries) to speak stereotypical slander.

It's a real shame when hypocrisy is this blunt. People should leave judgement to God and discontinue their role as acting God.

Joe

P.S. saintnicholas 25;; This is the kind of crap deapee is talking about. "americans for ya". I would retort but I'm above thinking I'm some kind of flawless robot that has any room to speak about how someone else is.

MagicShutter, I am sorry to say, the first amendment to the US Constitution does in fact give anyone the right to say pretty much whatever they want. Save incitement, there is no legal check. Something slanderous, libelous, and defamatory, may be civilly actionable. And, perhaps, you could be more sensitive. In this country people are not led in front of firing squads. In some, free speech is punishable by execution and/or lengthy imprisonment. While you are certainly entitled to whatever opinion you hold, and have the right to share it in as respectful a way as you desire, so does everyone else. If you want your rights protected, allow others theirs.

In this particular case, we are not governed by the constitution, but the site TOS, and those are more restrictive, and whose enforcemnt is spelled out. But, unless I am greatly mistaken, enforcing those is not your domain.
Tom

Geez - my fellow americans, relax and get some thicker skin. Can't you tell your being goaded? or maybe its just satire or meant as comical? relax and get a sense of humor.

Why not consider keeping DPChallenge 'photography' oriented and doing away with the crap that causes the most trouble here?

Hear hear! Move such discussions to Rant and be done with it...

This is a problem with no stock solution. Any discussion on any subject can turn ugly because of stupidity. That thread was dealing with comments and comments are certainly a part of photography in this site.

Terry is right: we need the abuse button to invite a referee. This will nip the idiocy at the bud.

Race and country of abode are absolutely different things. If someone tries to insult me by slagging off the English, I really don't see this as a problem. My colour and ethnicity is a whole different issue.

Agreed, but this does not effect me as everyone knows that Brummies are far superior to all others ;)

We Canadians counter all this nationality negativity by first insulting ourselves repeatedly.. then, when we bash the Americans, and they try and bash us back, we just say.. "man, we said that about ourselves last year, get with the program!" :)

I come here to play photographer. This is the best suggestion I have ever read on DPChallenge.

That's probably the best solution, considering the way things are going. ( I'll be the first to admit, that I, myself have been outspoken here a time or two - I apologize - let's get back to photography).

there shouldn't be any such discussions even in rant, they don't belong on this site at all!
