I noticed both top images in the macro without bugs of flowers challenge received a 2 vote without any explanation.
While the following 15 images did not receive a 2 at all. Come on... at least I would expect some kind of comment.
(maybe someone thinks score 1 is the highest and 10 the lowest LOL?)

I did not vote in the challenge, but some of us find macros of shiny metallic objects boring and pointless. |

Anyone can have his/her own voting system and reasons to score low. No problem with that.
My point was that I would expect at least some comment when using such an extreme low score.
But I realise that expectation is also due to my own scoring system. I would never give a 2 without a comment.
And I would only give a 2 if the image does not meet the challenge AND is unappealing or severely flawed technically.
But let's not repeat discussions about scoring systems..... |

I have been an active (and inactive) member here for over 20 years and it really bugs me that people still find it necessary to vote with 1's or 2's without bothering to comment to explain.
If you don't like Macro photography then maybe don't vote!
I really like this community and was gearing up to jump back in... |

Looks like you already did (jump back in, that is). :-)
Don't let one middle of the road challenge result get you down. Happens to everyone. Your profile proves that you have an eye for getting a great image. Shake it off. |

I am sorry someone did that to your image, it is absolutely not a 2! My rule of thumb is starting with a 5 for entering and doing the process of taking, posting an editing an image. I have only given 4's if the image is so off base with the challenge a few times in many years. One question I always ask myself if I would hang this image in my house. That is my determining factor in 8,9,and 10. 10 is saved for the most special image in the challenge. 1,2 & 3 are hurtful but what I have found is you are not usually the only one in the challenge receiving them. Stay strong and persevere forward. As my father in Law always said "don't let the bastards get you down". |

thanks Debbi ..
its really good to see how other people vote ..
i start at 5 as well .. which is for photos that dont grab me at all and are pretty blah .. but the photog has taken the time to enter the challenge .. which i feel deserves a 5 ..
6's for something that may not grab me that much but totally satisfies the challenge and has some redeeming factors ..
7's .. bit better than 6 and getting into the realms of impressing me ..
8's .. really good .. i'm impressed with the way the photo grabs me .. and wish i had the ability to take a photo like it ..
9's and 10's .. once again .. i'd be over the moon to have taken such an image .. and actually get a physical reaction when i open it .. like butterflies ..
now with so few ppl entering challenges giving out a 1, 2 or 3 .. has a huge affect on the resulting score ..
is it fair that one person giving out such a score has the ability to change the trajectory of an image ... i've seen images go down .4 .. from such a vote .. that's insane ..
back in the day when more ppl entered .. those low votes by one person wouldnt affect the end score .. so it wasnt an issue ..
now it is ..
some ppl dont seem to be concerned or worried about how their photo ends up .. or with the way the votes pan out ..
saying that they are here to learn .. but what learning is there when a very low .. or high vote .. gets no comment .. i'd say none ..
anyway .. this conversation has been going on for quite a while .. with no resolution ..
some ppl leave the site because of this 'problem' ..
i've been away not because of that btw .. i've been having some major 'health' issues .. physical and mental ..
but noticed this thread and thought i'd stick in my 2 cents worth ..
have a great day everyone .. :)

Sorry to hear that, Roz. I hope you will be able to take more photos soon, being creative is very therapeutic :)

I got an explanation for my vote of two on this photo (apparently it DNMC) which concurrently some voted 10 for. In fact I received more 10s than any other photo in the top five, go figure.
Who thought it met the challenge? |

Try not to let the aberrant low votes bother you. They can be very disconcerting and even seem intentionally hurtful. There will always be people like that even with a supportive community like DPC.

Disclaimer One: I did not vote in this challenge
Disclaimer Two: I wouldn't give a 2 for a DNMC. Often I deduct one point or less for DNMC.
Your picture is DNMC, in my opinion. You can't have a foreground without a background. |

I also did not vote in this challenge, but like Don agree it did not meet the challenge (not much in the way of background) and like him I rarely give out scores below 5. But I don't vote all that much; commenting interests me more. As well, when I enter - again not that much and really not much recently - the votes don't interest me nearly so much as the comments; a high score is very pleasing but the full range of votes is exciting. Who really knows what the numbers mean? This is not a mathematical consortium, but a place to practice the mysteries of vision.

This got more lower votes than I expected. Anyone want to help me understand where I missed the boat? |

I really liked your entry (7 during voting) and was impressed with the stamp you created and the story you told. However since yours was the only entry that included things other than a full stamp, I feel some voters likely voted it down because they considered it DNMC. I figured it would likely be in the top 5.

Got an 8 from me. Clarity exceptional, stamp hilarious, creativity of setup first rate. |

People will sometimes vote literally to their interpretation of the challenge. I suspect that you got some lower scores from folks who see this as a photo of an existing stamp rather than a design for a new stamp based on one of your own photos. It's a great photo though.. ironically might have ribboned in the recent magnifying glass challenge :)
