Is DPC a democracy? Please read the Forum "Generic Archival Challenge" and vote on your opinion . Vote by number: 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. Any other suggestions can be added after the voting ends. The voting will end midnight on Sunday the 23rd and the result posted on Monday. Of course SC has the last say!!!
1) A one time Archival Free Study
2) Occasional Archival Free Studies
3) A one time themed Archival challenge
4) Occasional themed Archival challenges
5) 2 and 4.

I think option 2 is already accounted-for by the occasional "Hidden Gem" challenge series ...Originally posted by Challenge Description: Dig through your archives to show us the best photo you've taken with a digital camera that you haven't already entered in a challenge. Make sure you still have the original with valid EXIF in case it's needed for validation.
Extra Rules
This is an ARCHIVAL challenge: you may enter any digital image shot by yourself for which you retain a valid original and which has not previously been used in a DPC submission. |

Then you agree to option 2 since Hidden Gem is just another name for Archival Free Study . Therefore if you also agree with No. 4 your answer is 5!! Unless you no longer wish to have a Hidden Gem (alias Archival Free Study) :) |

Option 5 (2) would suggest that I want an archival Free Study somewhat more often than what the Hidden Gems have been -- the last one was #7, which averages out to about one every three years.
I would envision option 4 as 1-4 themed archival challenges/year ... |

What initiated this was what I proposed in the "Generic Archival Challenge" forum. I suggested we have an archival challenge with no theme and call it an Archival Free Study. glad2badad objected to this idea saying, " I do think there's a place for archival challenges with a limited scope to be run a few times a year But give them a theme. At least make people do SOME work to enter". Had he said we already have a "Hidden Gem" challenge and he was good with that I would have said great let's do a Hidden Gem challenge! Since he is opposed to that I thought we should put it to a vote. If glad2badad is OK with a "Hidden Gem" challenge at this time then this vote would not have been suggested. If he is still opposed to a "Hidden Gem" (Archival Free Study) challenge at this time I would say let's put it to a vote! |

Curious. Are we going to rehash all of the conversation from the other thread in here also?
FWIW - I forgot about the 'Hidden Gem' that runs once in a while.
We (SC) have a loosely unwritten agreement on a handful of challenge types: Minimal, Extended, and Archival. Generally, you'll see Minimal at best, once a month, usually every other. Extended is a tad more frequent (besides monthly Extended FS), but not much. Archival, I believe is on a slightly less frequent schedule, but is considered part of the "mix". Sometimes these need a nudge. I'd consider the nudge made. :-) Hopefully I'm remembering this correctly.
edit - typo.

OK. Bottom line: Who would like a “Hidden Gem” Challenge in the near future? I am in favor of one to entice more people to enter a challenge which is all I intended from the beginning. |

There was an average of 21.5 entries in each of the challenges since the last "Hidden Gem" challenge including Free Studies. The Hidden Gem challenge had 40 entries. |

And last months Free Study had 42. I"m missing your point?

The point is that when there is a free study type challenge you get more than twice as many people entering. If you take out the free studies there has been an average of only 18.5 entries per challenge. So the Hidden Gem challenge stimulated over 2 times as much interest as a regular challenge. My point: stimulate interest. |

This.
THIS is what I like. I don't like Archival FS. If we have Archival, I think it should at least have to pertain to a challenge topic given. Let's at least stick with the basics of DPC, please.

Oh! And the odds of me being able to enter an archival challenge are very low.
I am usually away from my "archive" and any editing programs for weeks at a time, so I would have to pass on those challenges, most likely. I wouldn't want to enter a snapshot while everyone else is entering masterpieces. Ha! |

5. I love both new shoots and archival.
ETA - I also really enjoyed themed archival, as Lydia alludes to.
