I was wondering if there were any thoughts here about which batteries are best for a flash, and which charager. I have heard that batteries that can charge in 1 hour are almost necesary, and probably NiMH batteries..... any thoughts.

This is what I got for my 550EX and 420EX. I have two sets of batteries and they charge up real fast. It also came with a car charger.

quantum turbo is the absolute best way to go, followed by lithium ion non-rechargables, then NiMH last. those NiMH don't last nearly as long as the Lithium Ion (like 1/10th as long, and 1/5th as fast flash output) and the quantum is the best by far, especially if you shoot alot. I would typically spend $250-$300 per year in flash batteries, I bought my quantum used for $200. You can find them on ebay for way less than that even.

I am using two different types of NiMH AA batteries for my flashes and they work great. I picked up a set of 4 2300 mAH Energizer batteries with a charger at Sam's Club for $20 and I have a set of MAHA Powerex batteries that I bought on Ebay as well. They last approximately as long as standard Alkaline AA batteries and the recycle times are excellent. I reccommend these for anyone.

Does this look like a good deal for the sb-800? //tinyurl.com/49ax3

I am trying to figure out which batteries to buy now.. or which type (my flash just came today :) )
in the instructino book it says
" using size AA nickelhydride batteries will yield only about 70 to 80 percent of the flashes (1550 mAh at full output) obtainable with size AA alkaline batteries. The recycling time will also be about half of the time with size AA alkaline batteries"
with that statement it sounds like they are saying that alkaline batteries are BETTER.. they last longer and have a quicker recycle time.. but i thought NH batteries were better....

NiMH are "better" because they last a long time and don't produce piles of dead batteries. I think the alkalines operate at a slightly higher voltage (1.5 vs. 1.2) and so may work better in a device which draws a lot of power at once but for a short period (like a flash), whereas the NiMH will work fine in something with a lower constant draw, like a radio or MP3 player or camera.
BTW: Good deal at Costco right now: Panasonic rapid charger, 8 size AA (2300mAh) plus 2 size AAA (780mAh) batteries, AC adapter, cigartette lighter adapter, USB port -- all for about $25.

leaf: see my reply in this thread about the Watt-hour difference in high-quality NiMH batteries compared to alkalines. |

what about ni-cd's (nicads / nickel cadmium batteries)

nicds should be ok too, but again they are lower voltage than alkaline. they can charge quickly and be dischraged very quickly - the are what the RC car folks use. Finding them these days can be tough.
i use nimh in my 2 flahses. I just picked up 4 more 2200mah at wal mart yesterday for $6.27. Alkalines run 4.87!
Lion will sit with a charge the longest, followed by alkaline, nicd and nimh. nimh will be dead just sitting in under 30 days. nicd sould be stored 'flat' or discharged and while it is possible to have emmory effect, it is extremely rare if the batts are run flat each time (put themin a flashlight and leave it on to kill them dead). nimh can be recharged at part use and have no problems.
