Hey hey :)
I am mid a studio lighting course, great stuff :)
A couple of the other people (which makes it 50% of the course *laugh* came across a problem when we first got to play with out cameras and the studio flashes.
The pre-flash was tripping the strobes, so they fired too early and their photo was thus taken in the dark.
Is there a way with a 300D and 420ex combination to stop the preflash firing completely? I can do it with my setup (20D & 580ex) but have no idea how to do it with their setup.
Anyone know the answer to this one?

No. You will need the 550ex to do this.

Bugger.
Oh well, their problem not mine, but said I'd check it out for them as neither of them seem to know about forums etc.
Thanks John, I feared that might be the case.

I found that using a generic flash in the hot shoe disables the pre-flash on the Sony F828, I would think this would be the case fall all cameras with a hot shoe. I use a very low power flash, sometime pointed backwards, for me this work well. |

The 550 and 580 EX can be configured to fire these other strobes without firing themselves. I found this quite useful in a couple instances. You may have a situation where you want to use them to trigger other flashes/strobes without firing themselves.
** Edit: This function may only work with other Canon flash units. I'm not sure if it can fire external strobes without firing itself...

Only way to de activate the preflash is to set up the flash so that ONLY the trigger circuit is used (either by using a connection to the PC terminal, by using a generic hotshoe adapter or otherwise blocking the E-TTL contacts.
It might be easier to use the a "digital" slave for the studio flash packs. They will ignore the pre-flash and only trigger on the main flash.
Hope that helps. |

That, I think, could be a solution for them there Spaz, using a generic hotshoe to "shelter" the 420ex fro e-ttl. Nice idea, I'll let people know if it works.
