I am photographing a night football game (in a hour), the lighting is good for a football field, but,I only have an on-camera flash, last week I bumped up the ISO to 1600, lots of noise...AND another glitch, It's pouring rain, and 40 degrees!...any suggestions how to maximize this opportunity would be appreciated

ISO 1600 is very useable on the Rebel, shoot RAW and use a noise reduction program like Noise Ninja or Neatimage. You'll be fine. A fast (f2.8 or faster) lens helps!! Sports Photography is one area where Hardware makes or breaks a shot!

ps: Flash is almost useless under those circumstances unless you are shooting really close to your subject.

I have neat image and a fast lens and those sun shiny days make for awesome images...I am really worried about the rain on my equipment though should I be?

Wow! Difficult lighting situation!

Get as close as you can to the field. (I used to shoot B&W 400 ASA film at games in H.S. and the players and coach let me stand near the bench since they liked the idea of having pics of themselves. Ego.)

I don't know how to post-process RAW format yet, but if I were in your situation I'd consider shooting it provided you have large enough memory cards. And you'll have the jpegs anyway if processing RAW doesn't come easily.

I use disposable shower caps from hotels. Open a hole where the cap would fit over the top of the head and fit it around the lens. The elastic goes to the back of the camera and allows enough room for your hands to fit inside. If you have those plastic bowl covers that GLAD(?) makes a large one might work.

Thanks guys...I am getting paid for this and have a press pass (one would think I knew what I was doing...kidding)anyhow I do shoot RAW ordinarly but, I take about 400-500 shots per game and since this is a BIG playoff game I need all the memory I can get...so i don't think it's an option...I will be prepared next time and do the best I can with neat image...what do you think about the rain?

I was going to do a HS football game tonight (not paid like you) and was faced with the same problem, heavy rain all day. However the game was postponed until tommorrow. Maybe not the most helpful advice but I'd say check to see if yours is ppd before you head out into the wetness.

I suspect you're out "there" doing what you need to do.
Please tell us how it turned out and post pics here!
(Got my fingers crossed for you....but it does make it hard to type.)
