what is the difference in the JPeg file when choosing the raw+jpeg option?
Basically I am confused about the benefits of doing a raw+jpeg (large) vs raw+jpeg (small).

any thoughts out there?

it takes the RAW shot and just adds the jpg with it. Most of the use I have seen for it is speed when (are editing) you have to look at 100's and 100's of pics (like after a model shoot or something). They load faster than RAW.
Now is that a trade off to increased file size and more time with the in camera processing? You decide.
I just as easily open the folder in PS CS (of just RAW) and let it start loading into the browser and make the browser window as big as possible to do the quick look. Then I go do something for a few mintues and come back, and they are pretty much loaded.

so D, you recommend what? Larger jpeg size or smaller? And does it impace the quality of the raw? No, right?

when using the 300d and 10d and in RAW mode, your also taking a mid/high resolution Jpeg at the same time...the Jpeg is embeded in the Raw file, so to have access to it, you need to use Canon software (filebrowser or C1)...I find this to be very anoying since I only use PS8, so I'd love for my raw files to be 2mb lighter.

Whenver I do a serious shoot with lights I shoot in RAW with Small JPG. I breakdown the jpg once back home and preview the files I will be keeping and then work on those raw files.

I love Raw but that's just me. With JPG, every time you re-save a file you may get compression (lose info). I go from Raw to Tiff or JPG and to PSD, only getting back to JPG if needed.

but that's just me

I think I'm missing something. Is the jpeg for quicker viewing only or what?
I prefer working with raw as well & am thinking about file size & ease of viewing. If I use the raw+jpeg small function, will I lose anything in the raw files?

You won't lose anything in the RAW file, regardless of your JPG setting.
The JPG allows quick preview, and if it's like the 10D, just makes an extra file ending in .THM - which is in fact your JPG. You've then also got the .CRW RAW file.

Basically, consider the JPG an "extra" capture of the same image for quick viewing and printing, if need be, without having to bother with processing the RAW file. The RAW file is your "negative" that you can use to bring the most out of the capture for printing or whatever final purpose it has.

sorry if not to concise. I just shoot it in RAW. NO jpg. Not sure if my PS CS can read it anyway, and I WILL NOT use the piece of crap Nikon software to just view them.

I shoot raw with the smallest possible jpg embedded. The 300d and the 10d don't give us the options of NO jpg.
