Could you guys manage to improve the search for the forum i have been looking for certain things that i can't find. and i've been doing this search so i don't create a nem topic because its already been talked. What do you think of this suggestion. like instead of seacrh for the words in the message, the words would be search in the topic. Don't know if this has been suggested.

It's been improved slightly from the previous version. Lot worse before.

I'd really like if it could also return hits on user profiles.

So I could search for 'Gordon' and get a link to my profile page.
You can use the community profiles search, but it seems to take quite
a while to appear - having a single entry point would be good.

(not that I'm going to search for my own name much but...)

Someone else already suggested it in another thread, but using google with site:dpchallenge.com works wonders for searching. Not only that, you can actually find things like "acr" if you use google. The current dpc search depends on mysql lameness. It'd be much better if the search box simply did a google search with the site restriction. Everyone else is doing it!

Easiest way to do that... go to username.dpchallenge.com. It will take you directly to that user's profile.

That would only return results as of the last Google crawl of the site, where the MySQL-based search is real-time. The Google box works best for sites with relatively static content, it's not really a good solution for active forums.

It's easy to say "improve it," but harder to figure out the where and how. Do you have any specific suggestions for improvement?

are titles indexed yet ?
e.g., take many of the titles on the front page, plug them in and get a
hit on something entirely different.

can we exclude search terms (ala google's incredible useful - option)

I want the ability to search for words that are shorter than five characters. Like two characters, because I, unlike Gordon, would like to search for myself and I can't. :(

The ability to sort results by date or relevancy might be nice, too.

Most of the time people are searching for older stuff anyway and the forum content seems to make its way into google within a few days. Anything current (24hrs) is immediately available through other navigational means. As it stands, telling people to search the forums (using dpc search anyway) isn't always good advice.

Smart sites use google searching even for non-static content (e.g. photo.net) because it works and archived info (in the google-plex) is much easier to access.

The real-time argument is extremely weak compared with the benefits of google (and the bugs/shortcomings of current dpc search).

I'm in complete agreement with dwooldridge on this. the Google search tools are so well done it's not even funny, and incorporating that search engine would remove future updating and maintance of a search engine form the admins' responsibility, even though it would take some initial coding to implement.
i for one don't use the DPC search function at all anymore, simply because I can not do a more advanced search with it, and with the vast amount of posts in the forums, t can take near forever to weed through spurious hits. The lack of ablity to search short words really limits it too, IMO

My suggest is of instead of the search being made in all the words in side that title the search would be direct only to the titles and not the words inside the title, hope i made any sence. :)

The problem with that is that not everyone titles their thread with something helpful. There are lots of "I need help," "Look here," "what is this," etc.
