My entry:

That bright yellow bird was so pretty that I couldn't resist the temptation to enter the colour version of this photo, but something always felt wrong with it. Maybe I should have stayed within my comfort zone and entered the black and white version:

I like the BW outtake better. :-} It's awesome that you have this bird activity nearby to monitor & document. Very cool!

It's a good time of year for that with spring just starting. I wouldn't have noticed all the bird activity if I hadn't bought the M6 Mark II though because I never paid that much attention to them. My reflexes were too slow to catch birds in flight without the benefit of Raw burst mode and the pre-shooting buffer.

I liked your entry and was one of your sevens, but actually like the black and white version more. What I liked, beyond the colors, in the entry is the contrast of lines and feel of the bird and and the nest, the bough from which it depends. Subtracting the bright color allows one to better appreciate the foregoing aspects.

I like the BW one better, also.

It seems to almost make it a piece of art rather than a photograph...

Does that make sense?

I was one of your 7s. I like the black and white version but not necessarily more so than your entry. The bird is so beautifully coloured and as it is exotic to me I am glad to see those colours.

Thank you. My problem is that I really struggle with processing colour images.

If you are using Photoshop, try this experiment:

Take a color image and create an adjustment layer using the Channel Mixer, and a second layer above it using Curves.

Put the CM layer into Monochrome mode (making a grayscale image) and tweak color channels and the RGB Curves layer until you have a good-looking B&W image, then go and uncheck the Monochrome option* to view the adjustments in color.

*Sometimes you may have to copy any individual adjustments to the color channels and make a new Channel Mixer layer WITHOUT checking the monochrome option and copy in the adjustment values to see a color version.

Thanks Paul. I often try something similar using Nik Silver Efex. Sometimes it works well, other times it's not so successful.
