But you will be in the top 100! ;)
Early voters can be tough. Things can improve over the week--especially with so few entries. I wish you luck.

Yeah grrr... I currently have my highest score ever in "Macro w/o B&F" and my lowest ever in Heroes. I tried something creative and unique, and I guess the voters don't get it. :-( Oh well, it took me about 30 hours in all to do this shot, and I'm still kind of proud of it. |

I thought for sure i'd have a good score with my entry...sitting below 5 (just) with 24 votes. Took a look and did some voting myself...some nice pics there, some average (as always, like mine ;) but perhaps this will be one withe the winner gets only 6 point something. At least i'll finish the the top 100 and i like my pic. It might be slightly encouraging (to me anyway) that for once my score is slighlty above the other posters here, instead of way below! Fingers crossed... |

Went up a little. I do better when I don't think of competing against other submitters. I compete with myself, trying to raise my average vote. My average now is 5.34 so I won't submit anything I think will score less than that.
I'm getting closer! :)

Not very happy with it, but hey.
I really have to take it easy on DPC, I think I was a bit too serious about it and was sad when my pics didn't get what I'd expect.
I learnt that this community (as all others) have its favourites and sticking to them will get you high and vice versa. All americanizms will get better than european feeling (try american fireman and say italian carabinieri - somehow first one is much better hero - no matter how nice the picture/presentation/composition/you-name-it is).
Also - want a better score - put a sunset in your pic (will get you 1.0000 point higher for sure).
All this just to say I'm a bit discouraged by the votes. Pictures which follow the DPC style will go up while anything "a bit more creative" will be degraded.
How many times you looked at your pic and thought - "Well this is a great picture but will be slaughtered on DPC." and "The other one is not as nice but will go higher in the voting".
Please say I'm wrong. Maybe it's just the Monday morning mood.

Unfortunately, I don't think you're wrong at all. Going through the calendar scores.. I was shocked by how many really plain, boring, same ol' same ol' landscape shots turned out in the top 50. While other, far more creative, far better (imo) shots were overlooked badly.
Nothing we can really do about it of course. Judging has always been this way in anything that has ever been judged (look at olympic judged sports). We can just do our best, hope for the occasional great photo, and try to have some fun while doing it.
Or.. we can go down kicking and screaming :)

That's always an option :)
Then again I always say to myself - it's all about fun. And sometimes you take a pic, you have plenty of fun doing it. You love and you maybe know MOST of the voters will not get it, but you did it for yourself and enter.
But then again - (like this time with hero) - sometimes you just don't have the very obvious subject around (Switzerland hasn't taken part in any war for centuries therefore no 'military' heroes around and firemen wear strange uniforms which don't even make them look like firemen. [Just to make it clear - I'm not Swiss]).
So I do the Monty Python's:
"And now for something completely different"
and try alternative approach. Only I learnt (and this case is no different) that those won't ever get anywhere close to tops as only LITERAL interpretations get scored high.
Well, let the week roll and as we get closer to weekend I might just cheer up a bit and stop complaining.
It IS about fun, and there will always be narrowminded people. Just learn to ignore them and get the best of it all rather than complain about the worst.
Aha. That's my motto for this week !!! I'm all better now.
Have a good week everyone. Let the voters be gentle for you!

I didn't enter this one, I'm still trying to decide if that was a good idea or not.
There does seem to be a formula that makes for a safe score on dpc, I used to think that this might be a good thing as the voters represent a microsociety that refects the general publics opinions, now I'm not so sure. I have struggled to get a vote on another (much smaller) website, and I think this may be due to the fact that not everyone like the high impact images that do well here.
I grew up as a fan of The Smiths, I hated the plastic production type music, to quote Morrissey himself 'Hang the DJ, because the music that they constantly play, says nothing to me about my life'. I don't know if I'm right in saying this but I feel a little that dpc echoes the issue, plastic before passion is not a good thing.
Just my mumbles

At DPC, were are creatures of habit. Like someone mentioned before, we submit photos that we think are gonna score well, not photos that we are trully happy with. On the other hand, there are those who will try to shoehorn a dog, a cat or a baby in every challenge. I've noticed this quite a bit in Heroes. The thing is that it has been proven that unless you have an exceptional picture of your pet or kid, people are gonna vote it down. There must be at leats four dog pictures in Heroes. I understand that some dogs have done some heroic things throughout history, but when people think dog "heroe" does not automatically come to mind. I guess I'm contradicting myself a bit, so...if you really like your pet/baby picture, go ahead and submit it, but be readdy for crappy scores...unfortunately, that's just part of DPC.

Hey...sorry if this should be in another thread (couldn't find anything), but I was about to submit this when I realised at the last second I took it the night before the challenge started...
I'm kind of glad I didn't submit it as it's a crap shot manipulated into something that's one degree above crap...
What are your thoughts?

Hey Mike, I'm afraid you are right. I would have scored it harshly (probably 3-4). I think the b/w doesn't work especially with the grass as background. The subject is off center and indistinct. And I don't get the Halloween connection in the title. Please pardon the honest critique~
(By the way, I'm a big fan of your "Weary Arms" entry a few challenges back, for what that's worth.)

I kinda like it. I see it as a commentary on how kids are so quick to change their mind. A fireman is a hero one day and the next it is strewn forgotten on the grass, probably replaced by something not quite as idyllic.
Put a chunky gold medallion and a microphone in front of that and you have the passing of time from childhood to teen. |

I'm kind of pissed off, i was about 30 mins later to post the image. I originally though the challenge ended today, made a big mistake in thinking so. I believe i would've score pretty high. Oh well.
I'll try finishing up the pic and post it for comments later.
Good luck everyone. [/url] |
