I like my image a lot and thought I had good chances given the small number of entries. My score has been dropping steadily after being at about 6.4 with 20 votes when I went to bed last night.

I'm going to walk away from the update button and not come back for at least, oh, a minute or so...

Ditto: I have (in my opinion of course) a good entry, looking at the competition, worthy of a top 10 placing at least.
But it is dropping !

moodville, nova...interesting thoughts which sum up my opinions as well.

In theory, it could have been a great image but I'm tripod-less and it was taken after dark under streetlamps at ISO800...I went back to take a better photo a few days ago and the plastic helmet (which was a discarded halloween costume) had been cleaned up.

I guess the problem is that I hate setup shots so the neat thing about it was that the helmet was found that way...but anybody could make a 'better' photo with a setup, I suppose.

I've found that a lot of shots that I think are crappy will do well, and I can't figure out why so since I'm not too concerned about my average score I'm submitting shots that I'm not a huge fan of to see how they do. Although I really like my b&w photo so I can't wait for that one...

well, I really thought I had something special this time. Didn't see too many shots 'like' it. But, with a 5.68 last night, 5.3 this morning, and a sudden jolt to 5.6 I doubt this will be 'the one' either.

The jolt was probably me, I did vote one or two higher than my own maybe I even brought my own down :)

It's hard to tell, I think I'm just that far outside of the box. I guess I'm just not as commercial as I thought I was.. Yay me!

I can tell you how frustrating it is though, constantly being avg.

Huh? You can't bring your score down by voting others higher.... can you? Or was that a joke.

If voting other photos high brings down your own score I should have a much lower average because I always give high scores for good photos even when I'm getting 5's.

Higher scores for other photos make a difference in where you place, of course, but when your goal is to better your own avarage you feel free to vote other's photos where they belong rather than below yours.

Just MHO :)

I was joking, of course, I don't think my vote alone could possibly have a bearing on my own score/place.
I like to vote early when I have a submission to give a completely unbiased score, then I will return for a more detailed view and comment, now and again I may change individual votes as I feel.

Just a few points about the ‘hero’ challenge.
1. I just got through voting on all entries and commented on some and plan to go back and comment on more photographs later. With a limited number of entries made it easy for me to stay focused on my voting scale giving every entry a fair and balanced vote after studying each photo without the need to rush. That’s why I believe some challenges have to many entries that distract the voter.
2. I did not participate in this challenge because I just could not get the photo I wanted to come out right. I have to commend everyone that submitted an entry to this challenge. There are some great photos here.

Thanks Scott, assuming mine was included, I look forward to any comment you make on my image,

Note to self: Voters hate pictures of people who they don't think are heros but who could be as they just don't know who they are.

The avg vote fluctuates between 5.8 and 6.2.
It's so addictive...

You gotta be in their faces with meeting the challenge. I am kind of surprised how few police and /or fireman shots there really are. Being TOO cliche'd doesn't work well either, nor does being one of 10 of the same shot. There is a tight rope there...

I had trouble getting hte shot i wanted, with work and weather interfering, but am reasonable satisfied at 145 votes, 5.13. The one comment i got i agree with 100%.

Sitting pretty close to the low (I think it's been to 5.09) and as "high" as 5.3. Surprising because it has good comments, and even a couple "Best of challenge" remarks.

But I still think I will be in the top 100 for the challenge ;)

I was as high as 6.3 yesterday but have really taken a beating today. Hopes of a ribbon fading...

I dunno, I spent about 20 hours working on my shot, the most time of any I've done so far. And it's not doing well. It has a couple of tiny imperfections that I just couldn't eliminate, but I think the voters just aren't liking my creative idea.
