How well it fits the challenge is extremely important to me.
The quality of the image is often meaningless when I look photos. Does it incite any emotions or reactions? Now we're talking. There's obviously some leeway with regards to challenge topics, but those are the top two criteria for me.

I definitely understand wanting people to fit the challenge -- but I sometimes think people take it way too seriously.

I'm a bit curious if that why I received a 1 in the compression challenge. It looks like the bird is right next to her, since the people farther back are soft. But the photographer was using a 200-600mm lens. If it was all that close to her, she wouldn't have been able to begin to photograph the bird.

That's why if something doesn't fit the challenge, I never vote that low. There could be something that I'm just missing. I will take off a bit, but never down to 1-3s. Even if it's a purple shot in a orange challenge. Too many people have TRIED for the lowest points, and I won't give in to that either. :)

Actually, I see that WAY differently: both the bird and the photographer are tack sharp, which means the bird WAS very close to her, and whatever she's shooting was something else. I assumed you were tracking the bird in burst mode and she just appeared in your shot as you panned. That's not to say it isn't a good example of lens compression (it IS) but head/bird isn't where the compression is :-)

I agree, I hate seeing amazing images in challenges where they dont meet the requirements. If the image is beautiful, well done and gives me the feelings, I wont give it a very low vote, but certainly not as high as if it fits the challenge.

I believe that one of the most important aspects of photography as an art form is the individuals creativity in visualizing a subject or subject matter in a unique way. Who is to say that his/her vision is less right than yours. I suggest reading my starting remark in this thread. What I was alluding to was the possibility that the challenge title and the description could be interpreted at least 3 different ways and a submission should not be downgraded just because it was interpreted differently than you. Therefore, again I am not saying a duck is a horse but a horse can be a donkey or a zebra or a pony etc. all are valid.

Agreed.
But my friend who's director once said, "If the movie doesn't speak for itself, who cares what the director has to say."
The same sentiment could be carried over to any artistic endeavor. If the photograph doesn't resonate with the observer, it's not the observers job to find the meaning.

Again I'll point to the above.
I would never put the onus on the observer, that's being selfish. If anything I'd thank them they even looked in the first place.
