That seems weird because here you have a 200mm lens focused at 17.7" (Tamron) and that's 1/2.7 lifesize, but the 105 mm Sigma focused at 12" and that's 1:1?
The Tamron 200mm is nearly double the focal length, and only 1.5x the minimum distance. So shouldn't it make the object larger than the Sigma 105?
This IS confusing! |

not 1:1 - it's as they say a Close Up lense.
same with telephoto 1:2 lenses. 1/2 lifesize
with a true macro 1:1, and other close up accessories you could get up to 5:1 magnification - 5x lifesize.
this seems to be a confusing subject. |
yeah, I guess it isn't a true telephoto...but it is THE macro lens in the EOS line. No accessories needed to get 5x magnification. |

Sigma 105mm is awesome, all my macro is from it...I'm no Jacko, but it's done good for me.

Right now I have a 24-70 Sigma and a 70-300 Nikon so I'm missing a wide-angle and a macro. Glad to hear the praise for the Sigma 105. |
You may like to consider the Sigma 12-24/4.5-5.6 as well. This is a full frame lens for 35mm unlike the Nikon one which only has a DX-sized image circle. The price is also highly competitive, so do check it out. |

I absolutely love my nikon 60/2.8 micro, was going to get a nikon 105 in addition to that, but did some research and now i'm planning to add a sigma 105.
I would never get a zoom for macro stuff, generally they all have ugly bokeh, or at least that's the impression i've got from what i've seen. |

I have, and use, the sigma 50mm macro. It is perhaps one of the finest lenses Sigma makes. It reminds me a lot of the old 55 micro Nikkor I used as my main lens when I shot film... and I don't make that statement lightly.
Granted, their are lots of good macro lenses out there. The Sigma 105 is supposed to be great, but I have never used it.
However, I do have an old, manual focus copy of the Tamron 90mm and, wow, the lens is simply amazing. If the newer versions are as good you can't go wrong with that one. |
