If one of these out takes would have done better in the Poverty Challenge. I was thankful for all of the comments I received, but I was a little surprised by the fact that some of the comments said that this portrait did not show poverty to them. To me, the wear on this man reads of poverty really clearly, but maybe I need something more apparent. So, I would apreciate if anyone has any imput if one of these other two images would have been a stronger entry.

Here is my original entry:

Here are a couple of my outtakes:

You could read poverty into the face of your original shot, and it is a good strong image, but the third photo, showing him in his surroundings, just SHOUTS poverty, and for most people would have more clearly demostrated the challenge, I think.

I agree with lhall. Look at the blue ribbon winner - it's easy to draw similarities between your third shot and that. You did well with the shot you submited, but I wouldn't be surprised if the other did better.

I would have given the 3rd one a 9 or 10 (depending on mood at the time)

Without doubt it's a ribbon winner

Sorry, but you made the wrong choice on this occasion

Sorry but I think the 3rd one would heve been by far a much more stronger entry.

The third and the first are really nice for two different reasons. (so is the second, just those two are my favorites).

The first one shows the feeling of poverty in that man's face. When you look at it, you can almost see the life he's lived -- and it leaves a little up to the viewer to interpret.

The third one shows it as well but leaves little to be determined. It's still a GREAT poverty shot, but the first one just really grabs my attention.

For this challenge I think the 3rd shot would have done the best, but I agree with deapee. The picture tells the whole story without any imagination factor. Personally I think number two would be a much stronger photo then your original. Because it gives a little bit more then just the face, the bare shoulders points to no clothes/money and the face just confirms it.

Both 2 and 3 are excellent but I really like #2. Great work.!

Yeah two and three are much better. One is slightly blurry. But two and three are crystal clear. What can you do?

Thanks for the input, I had thought the close up of the man's face & features would be much more compelling than a more distant shot, but I was wrong. YOu try your best and then take what you get.

I would have loved a tighter crop of the third photo...I agree that it would have won the challenge.

I loved the close-up of the face and scored it an 8 but I think that establishing some context while still showing the weary face (which the third photo does perfectly) would have made this a winner!

I would have given it a 9...with the right crop maybe even a 10 (which I rarely give out).

If you do decide to crop the third photo, I would love to see it!

Edit: Either way, great photos!
