Just voted on Natural Numbers and was very impressed w/the imagination incorporated into those images! Way to go!
You have rated 21 of 22 images (95%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.3810. |

We'll leave the discussion as to whether or not folks read the challenge description and personal interpretations of it for after the voting is done, OK? Let's not poison the waters here.

To be sure, this is a personal take.
An ideal Challenge is one that sends us down new roads, even those bylanes we never knew existed. Looking into the archives, some of the more interesting Challenges of the last year or so have been 240 Pixels, Rat's Eye Perspective, Into Or Out Of The Frame, Boxy Composition, Headshot From Behind, and most emphatically The Unbearable Lightness Of Being. Even if I don't come up with anything I want to enter, just scanning the world with these ideas in mind is enjoyable and broadening.
The point that these types of challenges may not draw maximum participation is well-taken. Therefore a mix including challenges such as food, trees, blue, etc., along with quirkier ones, is optimal.
Challenges beyond my technical ability are skipped, but for many they are quite interesting and I enjoy seeing some exquisite results. I've only entered one archival challenge. This is because I don't have a large cache of images, and what exist are all swimming in Lightroom, not ever having utilized their impressive organizing options. Some just don't interest me, as I'm sure goes for most people.
All in all, I'm happy with the nice assortment of challenges offered, and greatly appreciate all the work freely given by those who make this a wonderful place to be. |

I've been missing in action for a while, and also out of the country to a bucket list place. I took about 10,000 images I was excited to get back and see where I could enter them. The challenges were all so incredibly specific, but even with 10,000 photos oh, there were only two challenges I could enter.
Life is really busy around the holidays with making Thanksgiving here going up for another Thanksgiving with 7 hour drive, it would really be nice to have a generic Challenge or 2 where we could just enjoy taking whatever photos we want to take. Shallow depth of field, tell us a story, etc. With kids home for Thanksgiving and with travel and with getting ready for Christmas, there's not much time. I wish one challenge a week could be a little more accessible. |

Re: The challenges were all so incredibly specific, but even with 10,000 photos oh, there were only two challenges I could enter.
The problem as I see it is whoever determines what topics are chosen is trying very hard to vary them to the point they're getting way too specific. So, I agree w/Wendy on this and would also like to see more generic challenges. I think more people would be inclined to enter them, including myself. |

How about:
"Turkey"- your take on what the word means (food, country, name for a silly person).
"Thankfulness"- show something you are grateful for.
"Traditions" - use an artful eye to capture a holiday tradition.

Okay, we have just put up an Open Challenge that runs for 30 days called "Family VI". That should help involve everyone, as it runs from today until after Christmas :-)

Family VI sucks (pardon my language). My family is deceased or out of state (and mind) so we don't bother celebrating the holidays anymore. I won't be entering it 30 days or not!
I do however, like Angela's suggestion "Thankfulness" as it pertains to something we ALL can relate to. In fact, Roz posted a side challenge on this topic called Gratitude in May and it was great.
Gratitude in May
Not only did this side challenge make us think it gave us the opportunity to express ourselves in ways we never have before.
I think challenges should make us think in positive ways no matter what our situation is. |

Photograph your "extended family", friends and neighbors you are close with. Photograph somebody else's family doing family stuff. Photograph family metaphorically, working on the theme of "the Human Family". Nothing in the challenge requires a feast or an occasion. Get some imagination going! :-)

Bear, you just can't win this and I am in the same boat, my closest family is in Australia, my Christmas celebration will be a long walk in the forest, uninhabited. Thanksgiving is American so it excludes quite a few of DPCers.
We have 6 challenges open at the same time, why not have at least three on popular, non specific topics, easy to understand, open to everyone's busy schedule? It may be boring to some but looking at the discussion around Distortion, coming up with fresh ideas will not increase participation. |

Nicely done, Georges.
Honestly, I don't understand the griping.
If you don't like a challenge idea, or it doesn't interest you, move along to the next one that does.
It seems like there are always people bent out of shape because the perfect challenge that suits them isn't available right then and there.
The whole point of challenges *IS* to challenge you. It's to push you, make you step outside your comfort zone, succeed, fail, and most importantly, learn something about yourself, photography, and the world around you.
So yeah......go to the front page, find the one that appeals to you least, and do everything you can to exceed your own idea of what you can do with it.
That's the challenge!

I thought the objective was to increase participation. Jeb and George I am afraid that you have gone off on a tangent ;)

Naw -- it wasn't griping. I actually really didn't see anyone griping. Bear asked and people answered. All valid points of view. Discussion is worthwhile. :) |
