Just got it used and no instructional manual included, can anybody help? When I install it, it powers the camera but the shutter release and thumb wheel do not work. Can anybody tell me what the various buttons are for?
A.
B.
C.
D.Main thumb wheel
E. Shutter Release

You are missing a switch in your picture.
There should be a small one at the 'front' under the shutter release, that enables/ disables the buttons. It will show 'red' when on (or maybe when it is off - you can switch it back and forth while the camera is on without any problems.) This lets you disable the buttons when you don't want to use them.
B & C are the same as the buttons on the back of the 10D. D replicates the thumbwheel on the normal body, E is the shutter release.
A opens the battery compartment. There is a space inside the grip for two batteries, and a space inside the 'battery stem' to hold the original battery compartment cover.

LOL I had the same problem, used grip with no manual, but I have never used the buttons :-)
(although I took a few minutes to figure them out just in case I thought they were useful..nope! I almost dropped the camera trying to use the portrait buttons) |

Thanks Gordon, I had completely missed the switch on the front that activates the shutter release and thumb-wheel controls. I also didn't know there was a compartment for the 10D battery compartment cover. Excellent!
Thanks for the reply also Lori! |

Not that mine was helpful, just letting you know you're not the only one out there willing to go out on a limb and buy used gear! |

You can also use that space for an extra CF card, i.e. inside your batt.grip.
Just remember where you put the original battery cover then :)

Well, as long as we're discussing used gear, here's my "buyer beware" story. I bought a Canon 80-200 zoom on eBay, paid about $65 because it had a slight sticking problem when zooming past about 120mm. I figured, how can I go wrong for &65? Oh, plenty. It came today, and this is the cheapest piece of crap excuse for a lens I can imagine. I was fairly naive, believing that if it had the Canon name on it, it must be good. Wrong. Next time I'll educate myself much better before bidding on anything.
On the positive side, today is our 15th anniversary and my wife got me a $500 gift certificate to the local camera gadget shop. Woo-hoo, I'm happy. That's where I got the used grip, among other goodies. |
