I'm mostly kidding here, but as long as we have a "Photographer thought comment was helpful" checkbox, why don't we have one that says "Photographer thought commenter was probably just bulking up their comment count and comment was really for ___"? And get a little guy in red holding his nose for the checkbox.
When I see comments like "ok," "nice try," and "CHESSY!" I'd really like to be able to add a point to a commenter's quantifiable lack of insight. But maybe that's just me.

How about a box for ... commenter is an artsy fartsy type who likes to look too hard for deep meanings in my pictures.

I disagree with this theory and this was discussed before the 'helpful' comment check boxes were added to the site.
The reason we don't have a 'negative' rating for comments is because there is no need for it. If you don't find a comment helpful, then you simply don't check the box. There is no need to downgrade someone no matter how bad you think their comments are.
A comment of 'great photo' or 'nice work' is not helpful either.
I think the primary purpose of the 'helpful' comment ratings is to help YOU figure out whether a photographer values your comment or not. It's an opportunity for the photographer to let you know that and nothing more.
Photosig allows you to downgrade comments.... you can even select a level of how bad you think the comment is. Try it out.. i think you will enjoy it :)

after receiving a negative comment from the same person 3 out of 4 weeks I must admit it would be a welcome opportunity to show that this person is spiteful and never says anything nice. |

oh my.. it's funny... I wish all of the comments I got were negative.. the negative comments tend to be the most helpful... they normally tell you what you did wrong or what you could do better... bring on the negative comments!

I'm not sure that I really find the "helpful comment" checkbox all that helpful anyway. Not that it's supposed to be a flawless system but a) not everyone votes and b)when checking back on some of the comments that I've left that haven't been checked as helpful, it's fairly obvious that the "helpful" ones have been the ones that say "beautiful! wonderful! i wouldn't change a thing!" and then ones in which suggestions were left are considered to be unhelpful (or just nothing at all). I guess what I'm trying to say is that with either or both kind of boxes (and I know you were mostly kidding), I don't think that the comment feedback is a strong enough system that it would sway the kind of comments that I'd leave anyway. |
