If you do go DSLR, look at and consider the prices of good lenses before you buy the body. If you spend a few hundred dollars on cheap glass instead, I guarantee you, you'll end up adding the cost of those to the cost of the better glass you will face sooner or later. Unless of course you're happy with a fixed 50 mm.

I agree....I used my standard 50mm on my Canon A-1 for about 6 months before I bought my first additional lense. it was a 28mm wide angle as I found myself backing into streets when trying to take abstracts of buildings or other items downtown.
I am very grateful for the response this thread has gotten...I guess anything will cause a stir if people are not only knowledgable but also passionate... :P
