Greetings...

I'm trying to sort out a few things and I need some assistance from anyone who uses Canon 550ex and 420ex flashes as slave units with the Canon ST-E2 remote transmitter...

I plan to setup a scenario where I'm using my ST-E2 on the camera to fire a 550ex and a 420ex. My objective is to NOT use the ETTL metering and have both flash units fire at full power. I'm not exactly sure how to accomplish this. I know I can make the 550ex fire at full power by setting it to manual mode and configuring it for 1/1 output power. If I do this, when the 420ex is triggered as a slave, will it automatically fire at full power?

Update:

After some testing, I have discovered that when I use the ST-E2 transmitter to fire both of these flashes as slaves, the 420 does not fire properly when the 550 is set in manual mode. The 550 fires first and the 420 fires after a short delay. When I switch the 550 back to ETTL mode, they both fire at the same time.

The 420 manual does say:

"If the master unit's flash mode is set to (manual flash) or (stroboscopic flash), the slave units will not fire. Be sure to set the master unit's flash mode to ." The master unit in my case is the ST-E2.

I think the issue may simply be that the 420 will not work in a slave array in any mode other than ETTL...

I can't help you, John, but thanks for posting the info. I have a question though: You can still pump up the overall flash exposure comp thru the camera right? Wouldn't that be the same as manually setting them to full power?

(I have the 420 only, but it's my plan to eventually get the same set-up you are experimenting with)

For the purpose of what I'm trying to do, I need to be guaranteed that the flash output power will be the same for each photo, so in theory, it won't work... but in reality it may work.

What I'm trying to do is use my hand held meter to take a reading of my flash exposure for some portraits I'm gonna be doing tomorrow night. I'm setting these up in the garage at my parent's house. I wanted to setup my flashes and then meter the exposure with my Sekonic L-358 meter. I can probably still use this to get a baseline starting point for the shutter speed I prefer for the shots. I'm going to test it tonight so I'll know more later...
